Hi,

has anyone had thrush in pregnancy that doesn’t seem to want to go?

I’ve just finished antibiotics and it’s given me really bad thrush- my bits became so swollen! I used the canestan internal and external cream on Sunday night and the itching has gone but it’s still swollen down there. Does canestan take a few days to work or do I need to do the treatment again? Maybe try the pessary?

many thanks 🙏🏻

I’ve had what seems like constant thrush in this pregnancy and the GP said it’s really common when pregnant. You can try and use probiotics after taking antibiotics to help restore good gut bacteria which may help. I’d give it a few days to see if the swelling goes down and maybe continue to use the external cream in that time. If it doesn’t go I’d take a visit to your Gp for a swab to check it’s definitely thrush. Id also probably steer away from the pessary and go gel or cream if you need it again as I think you tend to be dryer down there when pregnant so the pessary may not break up and treat the infection as well.

YES! My word I was dying from itchiness in the first trimester for WEEKS! All during lockdown of course, so no chance of being seen by a GP. I tried everything, and eventually the gp sent me a swab. I was still VERY swollen down there, but it seemed to have cleared up by that point because the test came back negative.

I stayed swollen for the rest of the pregnancy 😐

swollen appearance can be normal in pregnancy due to the increased blood flow down there. If there are no other symptoms that’s probably just another one of those pregnancy joys!!

Me!! It only cleared for me after around 4 weeks when I used the pessary!

Yes, I’m using the canesten pessary once every few weeks or so. It kills it off for a while but always comes back - feels like my bits are on fire ☹️

I have always found that thrush takes a little while to clear ie you need to use the cream for at least a week. I also have used pessary probiotics which can help. My GP was unsure about this, as they are not common where I am from but she called up the maternity hospital and they confirmed that women sometimes use them for thrush during pregnancy.

I am very sorry to tell you that the only thing that cured my pregnancy thrush was giving birth.
Lots of canesten and rinsing in cool water for short term relief.
How much longer do you have to go?

Many thanks for the replies!

I’ve asked my GP via e-consultation whether I can come in and do a swab just to check that it is thrush- does that sound like something they will do? I have no idea when my next midwife appointment is so I can’t wait around till then 🫤 x x
