Chunks of mucus plug last night - now nothing?

I'm 39 weeks and lost quite a few chunks of mucus plug last night. Woke up this morning and nothing since completely back to normal.

Is this normal? With my first I lost it all in one go in labour so not sure if this is normal or indicating anything.

Thanks x

With my first I lost bits of the plug a few days before going into labour, sounds normal but a good sign that things might be imminent! Good luck!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 22/12/2022 21:56

Totally normal, my mucus plug went a week before my second arrived :) enjoy your new lovely baby when they do arrive!

TheShellBeach · 22/12/2022 21:59

It could easily be many days before you go into labour, OP (I am a retired midwife). Good luck for when it happens!

KylieKangaroo · 22/12/2022 22:06

This happened with my second and I gave birth 4 days later. In some ways it was worse as it felt like it was 3 days of contractions on and off! Good luck are you hoping for a Christmas Day baby? 🎄🙂😇

Suzie35 · 22/12/2022 22:43

@2358853b ahhh ! Hopefully not too long left thanks I found it strange how it was just coming out in blobs so much then stopped this morning xx

@TheShellBeach fingers crossed not too long !! I didn't have it with my first so found it strange. Baby isn't engaged either and is back to back so have that to look forward too! (First was back to back but much smaller this ones measuring 2 weeks ahead Blush) x

@KylieKangaroo ahh this is exciting ! How was your second compared to first? I am absolutely dreading it this time round!!

No :( as bad as it sounds I really hope baby either comes earlier (very little chance now) or leaves it until after as I would hate to leave my toddler over Christmas Sad would feel so much guilt x

Oh bless you I'm sure it will be fine at least you know what to expect now! Hope you avoid Christmas Day in that case!

Actual labour was much faster literally an hour or so but pre labour and contractions went on for days as I said and that was not fun 😅 good luck!

Update for anyone if they read this... have just lost quite a bit more but no other signs. I had bad back pain and period cramping through the night that kept me awake but nothing since...Plug has just come away in more big chunks ...I'm nervous now!

OP posts:
TheShellBeach · 23/12/2022 13:12

Don't be nervous, OP. You've done it once and you'll recognise when you're properly in labour.

Honestly, when I worked on labour ward, women were always ringing us up to tell us they'd had a "show" - and we just told them to wait until they were having contractions before they rang again (or waters breaking).

It may just be the head engaging. Was your labour okay last time? Is there a particular reason for you to be nervous?

TheShellBeach · 23/12/2022 13:15

Ah - I've just seen your post where you say that the baby is back-to-back.

With any luck, it is turning so that its back is anterior now. Let's hope so.

Do not worry about the size. The fact that you've given birth once already means that things are pretty stretchy down there.

burnout1993 · 23/12/2022 14:27

You’ve absolutely got this!

I lost mine with my first within a few days of arrival so I’d say hopefully you’re on the last stretch now.

Suzie35 · 23/12/2022 18:18

@TheShellBeach thank you! 😊 I really hope so!! I’m mainly nervous because of he’s size x could it be a while until labour starts ? I had bad period cramps and lower back pain but stopped around 3pm today so feels like it’s all completely stopped now after this morning x

@burnout1993 thanks this gives me some hope that it won’t be too long ! It’s so strange how it is stopping and starting with the cramps. I feel if completely normal again now 😅xx

It's impossible to say. With my third baby, it was a fortnight after I had the show before I started contracting.

TheShellBeach · 23/12/2022 20:02

"Slow start, quick finish" is a well-known maxim! I bet it happens on Christmas Day. Sods law.

Cas112 · 23/12/2022 20:03

I started losing at 38 weeks but still needed to be induced at 40 +6

Perfectly normal OP

cheesywhatsits · 23/12/2022 20:22

I started to lose bits of mine on the Monday, contractions on and off by the Wednesday, and still losing plug, getting strong but not regular contractions and the hospital adamant I wasn't in labour because my contractions wasn't regular, had her the early hours of Thursday morning !

Good luck it won't be long now ❤️🎄

YorkshireLawyer · 23/12/2022 20:33

I have also lost small bits of my
plug over the last week or so and had some period type cramping and a couple of hours of contractions yesterday, but not ramped up to anything yet. Still a couple of weeks from due date but the midwife said on Weds my cervix is very stretchy and basically ready to go any time now. Just hoping to hang on till at least Sunday evening now!

Suzie35 · 23/12/2022 21:24

Wow okay thanks ladies! Seems to vary so much. My little one isn't even engaged properly yet so probably be a while!

Plus everyone in my family has all of a sudden got the lurgy so wouldn't be very comfortable leaving my toddler with anyone at the moment if I went into labour Sad. Really annoying it's happened bang on when we are due but may be safer for bubba to stay in at the moment Blushx

Any news, OP?

PopsicleHustler · 27/12/2022 13:12
