Confusing early pregnancy ultrasounds

This is my second pregnancy and my doctor and I are both very confused about my ultrasounds. Going by my last period, I should be 8 1/2 weeks pregnant. I do believe I ovulated late, though. Last period was Oct. 22. I got my BFP on Nov. 18th. I went for my first appointment on Dec. 15th and the doctor saw only a sac that measured 6 weeks pregnant and a yolk sac. Six days later (yesterday) I go back. At first he tells me it is still just a sac and perhaps a blighted ovum until the nurse said “look to the top right, there is movement”. So he moves his transvaginal ultrasound wand all kinds of directions and eventually finds a little bean stuck to the side of my uterus with a visible flicker inside. The machine picked up on the heart beat very faintly, but it wasn’t enough to confirm the pregnancy. In only six days the embryo grew a bit and now has a heart beat that is only visibly seen. Doctor looked perplexed and said “there’s something in there and there is a flicker” but he doesn’t want me to get excited. He’s running some bloods on me and and I’m going back in a week for an ultrasound. I’m wondering if maybe I’m just super early or is there something wrong with this embryo? Why is it so hard to find?! Anyone have a similar experience?

Is this doctor an obstetrician or similar eg are they experienced and qualified to do ultrasound? I'm assuming yes.

Usually they would ask you to come back in a couple of weeks rather than 6 days so they can compare expected growth. It could be you are less pregnant than you think (when did you test positive?) Or it could be this isn't viable and is growing very slowly (usually predictive of it stopping growing). I hope it all works out for you.
