How did you conceive a girl?

Just for fun really. I've got 3 boys and am currently pregnant with baby 3. We have 2 boys already which I'm almost certain we're conceived either the day before / the day of ovulation. However this time we only had sex 4/5 days before suspected ovulation, and I'm curious whether the old wives tale was true for anyone else which says that the further away from ovulation you have sex, the more likely it is to be a girl.

Has this been true for anyone else? I genuinely would be over the moon with another boy but would be lying if I said I wouldn't love a girl one day so just curious to see what others experiences are

TIA

2 daughters, 2nd one conceived about day 25, so didn't think it was a time in my cycle I could get pregnant.

I was coming to say " by having sex"

Parky04 · 21/12/2022 15:51

By doing it 'doggy style'!

TTCBBY3 · 21/12/2022 15:53

@Parky04 hahahahah I heard this somewhere else too! Too late, fairly sure this baby wasn't conceived that way but there's always next time 😂

I have one boy, a baby on the way and we’re hopefully planning to have three children so either really would be lovely but part of me is hoping this one is a girl just so that there can be no pressure (from anyone else!) with the last one and we might even leave the gender of #3 a surprise if that’s the case. I loosely followed the baby dust method this time to try and sway our odds a bit as I knew nothing about it last time but did everything you’d do if you were ttc a boy and sure enough he’s a boy. This one was conceived 2.5 days before ovulation so I’m just hoping that was long enough but we’ll see! The baby dust method says to only have sex once but when you’re trying to pinpoint such a fine window before ovulation it’s near impossible if you only get one shot and can’t even base it on ovulation tests so we ended up going more with the shettles idea of doing it every night in a row then stopping. Will let you know in a few months, so far actually haven’t thought about the gender at all as I’m just so nervous for the first scan etc to see that there’s actually a little person in there and they’re okay!

The sex is determined by the sperm so nothing you can do naturally

DandyLyon · 21/12/2022 20:36

There's a website called genderdreaming where they set out and test all these theories, bringing them together for a plan either way

Unescorted · 21/12/2022 20:41

Find a bloke with several daughters and shag him.

PoinsettiaPosturing · 21/12/2022 20:53

Have 3 DDs and have conceived at all sorts of points in my cycle. There's no way to 'try for' a specific gender - plenty of medical evidence to show this. It's whichever sperm meets egg first - the sperm determined the sex of the foetus.

ShowOfHands · 21/12/2022 20:56

It doesn't work. The science behind it doesn't stand up to scrutiny and the bloke who came up with the theory actually confused male and female sperm. In all tests, chances remain 50/50 ish.

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 20:59

My in laws were open in their desire for any future DC to be a boy. I'm pretty sure that's what did it 😂

There is some evidence to suggest diet and environment plays a factor. No way to guarantee though, just a possible slight increase of the odds. I read something a while ago about how more girls tend to be conceived in times of crisis and boys in times of plenty. I think your body reflects that.

Also didn't new research suggest that the egg chooses the sperm rather than it being totally random (based upon factors like the above)?

DaftyInTheMiddle · 21/12/2022 21:02

Doesn’t the sperm determine sex? All eggs have X chromosome (as female is xx) and sperm are either x or y.

DandyLyon · 21/12/2022 21:05

Yes the sperm determines the sex but the egg has a role to play in choosing which sperm it attracts/lets in

Twoscotcheggsandajarofmarmite · 21/12/2022 21:06

I tried that and got a girl after two boys. I think the “reasoning” behind it was that the male sperm swim faster but die off sooner, so by the time your egg is ready there’s only female swimmers around. I knew in my head it was rubbish and it took three months to conceive but it was fun trying.

RambamThankyouMam · 21/12/2022 21:12

Had sex once that month, 5 days before ovulation.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/12/2022 21:14

No idea. Had lost a boy in the second and third trimester and only wanted another boy. We had a blazing marriage defining row when DH said "no more, we've got one and I'm not spending more than another £100 on this nonsense."

I threatened to leave him and we went out for a terse day with ds1. We made up that night. I didn't think I did boys. No idea about ovulation.

She's 24 and adorable, always has been except between 15-17

Alarae · 21/12/2022 21:24

Well, the first born of DH and his two siblings have all been girls. Ironically his mum kept going until she had a girl, so it's quite funny all first borns were girls!

It's all a bit of finger in the air stuff. Unless you go get sex selection IVF of course.

AutumnIsMyFavouriteSeason · 21/12/2022 21:28

Both my DDs were conceived when we tried only once in the month. Wasn't by design, more due to DH travelling, but early in the cycle/ only once - probably made sure only the female swimmers were left when the egg appeared.

hollyjolls · 21/12/2022 21:38

I'm confused by your post. You say you have 3 boys but are pregnant with a 3rd baby. You then say you have 2 boys.

Either way the shettles method has been proved to be nonsense. Of course it's 'worked' for some as there is only a 50/50 chance.

Laurakiaora · 21/12/2022 21:39

I had sex twice the day I ovulated (nothing for a week before as my partner was abroad). I was tracking ovulation with temping, OKPs and using an app so am positive of my dates. I honestly figured we were out of luck that month since it was so late to be having sex.

According to the myth I should definitely be having a boy. Three scans have confirmed that I'm having a girl.

RambamThankyouMam · 21/12/2022 21:44

It's a biological fact that boy sperm is faster and dies quicker, while girl sperm is slower and lives longer. Therefore, it is possible to manipulate this.

Without exception, every baby I know who was conceived through IUI on the day of ovulation is male.

Notanotherone6 · 21/12/2022 21:48

Regular sex, no messing about with ovulation kits or the like, just tried to keep it fun.

5 girls.

But then, I'm sure some blokes naturally produce more of one sex than the other. My husband is probably one of the least blokey blokes that you could find.

custardbear · 21/12/2022 21:50

Don't believe that theory, my DS was conceived after my DH went away with work and I fell pregnant what muT have been about 10 days later.
There can't be a way really, Mother Nature has a way of making sure it can't be fucked about with 🤨🤪

justasking111 · 21/12/2022 21:55

Read years ago that if you had a sweet tooth you'd have a girl, savoury tooth a boy. I've never had a sweet tooth. I've had three boys 😂
