No heartbeat on EPU scan - 6 weeks pregnant

I’m look for some advice because I am totally beside myself.

This is my first pregnancy, with my last period being the 5th November. On Friday I started experiencing some light spotting which hasn’t progressed or become heavier, just spotting.

I called the GP yesterday who referred me to the EPU for a scan which was today. On the scan they could see the gestational sack and yolk sack but couldn’t detect a heartbeat, they also said they could see some blood around the sack itself which could explain the bleeding. Beyond this, they didn’t say much and said it could go either way and gave me a leaflet about IUPUV.

They have booked me in for another scan for a weeks time but the unknown is killing me as I expected to come out with an answer one way or the other.

Any thoughts welcome - just trying to be realistic and see if anyone has experienced the same.

6 weeks is very often too early for a conclusive scan or a heartbeat to be seen.

This happened to me when I had bleeding, going by my last period etc I was over 6 weeks pregnant. The lady that scanned me said I was only 5 weeks at most when they seen no heartbeat. Went back a week later and there was a heartbeat and they said I was around 6 weeks at that point.
It could be that you're just a bit behind with the growth x

Sorry you’re worrying about this.. my last period was 15th November and my scan isn’t until new year so that is really quite early.. just looking at my calendar I think you’d be 2 days away from being 6 weeks? It’s so easy to say and I almost hate saying it but do just try to relax and not worry too much as mine is at 6 weeks 5 days and even then I’m thinking I could be too early for a heartbeat. Don’t panic, hope all goes well at the next one ❤️

Hi, just to say you’re not alone! Our dates are exactly the same- I make I should be 6 weeks 1 day today but on a scan today there was only the yolk sack and gestational sack. I had an early scan as my symptoms dropped off over the weekend and I’ve had two missed miscarriages previously. Been told to wait two weeks for a rescan, though might see if we can move it forward to 10 days as that should be long enough to tell. Given my history and drop of symptoms I’m doing my best not to raise my hopes - but I think it’s very common at this stage and there’s so many success stories from people who have had similar experiences. There’s no reason why this might not be you too!

i would also say don’t worry about the bleeding too much - I’ve had two missed miscarriages and two healthy children and the only time I’ve had bleeding in pregnancy was during the first trimester of my youngest and she was born very healthy at 39 weeks.

I know it’s so easy to drive yourself mad during the wait. I try not to get attached in the early stages of pregnancy now anyway and am doing my best to distract myself with Christmas but clearly I’m here searching it on mumsnet! But all being well you’ll be one of the very, very many who’s just a bit early to see it on the first scan and all’s fine on the next check. Good luck.

Hi, I’m in the same position as you do with you in solidarity.

Last period was 4th November and I went for a scan at the EPU yesterday due to spotting, thinking I was 6 weeks so assumed I’d see a heartbeat as I saw one then with my daughter. They dated me 5 weeks 6 days, saw the gestational and yolk sac but no fetal pole/embryo. The cause of my spotting was due to a subchorionic haematoma, hopefully nothing to worry about.

I was beside myself at first but I’ve done a lot of googling and honestly I’m not too concerned at this point - there seems to be a lot of cases of no heartbeat at 6 weeks, it’s very early and I know a lot of places don’t like to scan that early because of this.

Please try not to worry too much ❤️

I didn’t even get a heartbeat when their was a fetal pole visible and then saw a strong one a week later so I’d try not to worry too much at this stage.

This happened to me, almost exactly the same situation.
I went back the week after for another scan and that scan is now 19 years old and at university.
Sometimes it's just too soon to see the heartbeat at 6 weeks.

I went through this as well - just over 10 years ago now. For us it was a two week wait. It was the hardest, longest two weeks I have ever lived through. We just had to get through it. And thinking about it still makes me want to cry even now.

Ds is 9 and a half now. I really hope that you get the answer you want.

@MrsLEM8 what happened? I'm in a similar situation. Thank you
