2nd pregnancy, 6w +2d
(1st ended in miscarriage at 11 weeks)

Postive test on 26/11
Saturday took a clearblue digital showed pregnant 3+
Had some red blood for a few hours on Sunday, since then just a little brown blood/discharge when i wipe.

Any point in me trying to get an EPU scan this week?
Last time I'd had a scan at 7+2 and seen heartbeat so i know scan reassurance is no guarantee. And not sure if I'd rather have hope while away over Christmas visiting family, rather than knowing the pregnancy isn't developing as presumably there's nothing they can do to 'fix' it at this stage. I'm 41.

Already did massive snotty cries on Sunday when i thought i was losing it again. Now feeling more hopeful.

Been ill with a cold/flu thing for 5 days so not trusting my own judgement.

My EPU will see me from 8 weeks after last menstrual period and I ovulate late so that makes me 6w3d when I am booked in for a scan. It's really up to you whether you want to. I prefer knowing how and what stage I get to regardless of the outcome. I had a MMC in September and it was still useful to know that a heartbeat had been seen at 6w2d as this was further than previous early losses. I think for me as well there are underlying issues and I'm going my GP tomorrow or otherwise a private doctor next week to ask for progesterone in the meantime. I have various blood tests to back this up though.

There is also evidence that if you feel more looked after it can improve outcomes and that's probably enough for me to warrant it, even if I end up with another loss. It's a balance between stress and being informed.

I’m so sorry for your previous loss, but gentle congratulations on this pregnancy. I had a miscarriage in June and being pregnant again can be completely terrifying and overwhelming, particularly if you have bleeding. I had bleeding at 5 weeks and my EPU gave me a scan to check it was in the right place (and then follow up at 7 weeks where I saw heartbeat) and prescribed me progesterone (NICE guidance to prescribe progesterone in pregnancies where there is bleeding and you’ve had a previous miscarriage as can reduce risk of another loss).

Take it easy and be kind to yourself. It does get easier as the weeks go past, so do anything you need to help reduce the anxiety (I had scans pretty much every two weeks in first trimester). All the best.

Thanks for your replies.
@hrf1503 did the EPU prescribe the progesterone?

Yes they did, I took it till 16 weeks, I’ve linked the guidance below in case helpful but your EPU will know about it. It might not help if it’s not a progesterone issue that caused the miscarriage but it can’t harm (and made me feel like I was at least doing something in a time where you otherwise have no control). I’m now 27 weeks. Some Trusts require you to have a scan confirming the pregnancy before prescribing… mine gave it to me before scanning.

Thank you, I've got a scan booked at epu so will ask them.

I've had a lot of miscarriages and I know how frightening this scenario is.

However it isn't unusual for bleeding to happen in early pregnancy and for nothing to be wrong. I bled on and off for a fortnight at about your stage of pregnancy (and I had never had a pregnancy where bleeding occurred which didn't end up in a miscarriage) but this time, everything was fine. That was 28 years ago and she was and is fine.

I hope your U/S gives you good news. Bleeding doesn't always mean the end of a pregnancy. Good luck!

Whataretheodds · 16/12/2022 15:17

Had the scan today. Faint heartbeat and size ok but a large subchoroonic haematoma which is likely where the bleeding came from.
Follow-up scan in 2 weeks and progesterone prescribed which i knew to ask about because of your response @Hrf1503 so thank you very much for that.

Im glad you got some answers and baby is well Flowers

Hrf1503 · 17/12/2022 19:06

I’m really pleased for you @Whataretheodds, glad you saw the heartbeat and got the progesterone. I had a subchorionic hematoma too (which is incidentally also what likely caused my bleeding) but it was quite small and it cleared up with any further bleeding. If it’s a large one you may well have more bleeding but I heard from a lot of women who had large hematomas and their babies were fine (but understandably made for a very stressful time). Good luck for your scan in two weeks, hope it all goes well x

Mummaganoush · 03/01/2023 20:40

How are you doing OP?

Whataretheodds · 05/01/2023 22:39

Thanks all, i had no further bleeding but sadly the 2nd scan (last week) confirmed delayed miscarriage, heartbeat no longer seen.

But clear from speaking to clinical staff that it wasn't an inevitable outcome so I'm glad i went for the scans.

I’m so sorry for your loss OP, its absolutely devastating. I found a podcast called The Worst Girl Gang ever really helped me after my miscarriage, hearing the experiences of others helped me not to feel so alone and they have a Facebook community as well, just in case you find that kind of thing helpful.

Take care of yourself as much as possible, I’m so sorry again x

Whataretheodds · 06/01/2023 20:36

Thanks for your kind words @Hrf1503

I'm so sorry, OP.
Sending you love. It's an awful thing to happen.

Whataretheodds · 07/01/2023 20:35

It's shite.

I've had a bit of spotting this evening so not sure I'll make it to Friday's MVA.
