NIPT verses combined test

Really confused. I had the combined test that showed the risk of Down's to be 1 in 35. I then had a NIPT test which showed my risk to be low. I'm 40 years old. Which test should I trust?

As far as I know the NIPT is more accurate then the combined screening!

you can always ring and ask your midwife to go through all the results with you too, might give you some reassurance :)

all the best x

Research suggests that NIPT can detect over 99% of babies who have a chromosomal abnormality, meaning the odds of a false negative are very very slim. Odds of a false positive are slightly higher however, and I have heard of people being given a high likelihood who have then gone onto having a CVS and then getting a negative result.

The combined test is highly inaccurate. We received a high reading on combined test and low risk on NIPT. Went on to have a perfectly healthy son.

In short, trust NIPT.

NIPT is very very accurate for downs. A lot of your combined risk is probably your age.

They're both "accurate" if you understand what they're telling you - they are both about risk, not about diagnosing Down Syndrome.

So, your 1 in 40 from CUBS is telling you that out of 40 women with the same measurements as you (and only looking at those measurements), they would expect one of those women to have a baby with DS.

With the NIPT they're measuring different things and out of (say) 10,000 women with the same results as you, 1 would probably have a baby with DS.

You're still in the 1 in 40 from your previous test, but with this extra information from NIPT you now know that it's highly unlikely that you are the "one" from your CUBS test.

Thank you all so much- this is really helpful.
They also told me my PAPP-A is 0.310
Not sure what this means- googling like mad but just getting more confused
