I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about steroids in pregnancy?

My dog has been prescribed cream and tablets which are steroids the vet said there is risks to me applying but if I use gloves it could possibly be 0 but the risks are there.

Only I can apply them I'm quite worried about it just wondering if anyone knew anymore about it or reassure me

As long as you wear gloves when applying the cream and handling the tablets there is no risk.

Thank you - can I still have him out on the sofa with me? Or does he have to be separated I feel so sorry for him he's wondering what's going on😩

You can still have him out with you. Obviously just don't touch where you have put the steroid cream, but otherwise can treat him as normal.

I work in a vets and agree with pp :) I can still dispense/apply steroids but must wear gloves, and no problem handling the animal after at all

Okay thank you - unfortunately my mum applied the cream earlier and got some on my arm I've washed it off will it cause affects to the baby? I've got ten days of this and im panicking

It really won't cause any issues. The dose in the cream is so tiny.
One of mine is on steroids long term and I don't even wear gloves giving the tablets as the risk is so minimal.

I've just spoken to a vet nurse and she said that reoccurring exposure can cause harm, it's a potent steroid apparently! They said the tablets are fine with gloves but not the cream so I'm not sure what to do!

I'm a vet nurse and I think you are massively overreacting. I'm pregnant and have a dog taking steroids.
Wear the gloves, apply the cream and give the tablets. Then act normally around your dog.

Bunny2006 · 07/12/2022 20:11

As you washed it off you will be fine. I know it's hard not to worry during pregnancy. I take steroid tablets myself for IBD and my baby is doing well at 32 weeks, so a brief exposure to cream that was washed off will be fine, you can always contact your midwife for their reassurance

I have a high risk pregnancy so I'm bound to overreact about things currently!
The vet nurse I spoke to said that the tablets are fine but continued exposure to the cream isn't great for me at all the vet also told me to not administer it so I'm not sure what advise to take but I'll do whatever aslong as it's safe

Yeah I've read up on the data safety sheets which advised against pregnant women administering which is what the vet told me.
Im not concerned aslong as it's okay to do this for the next 8days and won't affect baby at all

What steroid is it? I used steroid cream myself while pregnant so seems quite excessive to worry about.

Lhh95 · 15/09/2023 08:06

Hi, just wondering what the outcome of this was? I have had the same situation, my doing shock after having his ear drops and it went onto my skin. Been worrying all night as I am 22 weeks pregnant. Thank you

TTCAbroad · 15/09/2023 12:49

@Lhh95 Just make sure you’re washing your hands/skin afterwards and you’ll be fine!

RiderofRohan · 15/09/2023 13:19

Topical steroids touching your skin will not harm the baby. As a doctor, I prescribe topical steroids to pregnant women as needed.
