Hi Everyone,

Going for my booking in appointment next week. A few days before my scan.
Will the midwife listen for a heartbeat as a matter of course or will she tell me it is too early and not be willing.

Just curious really, would LOVE IT if she does but gut feeling is telling me she won't.

Anyone know the answer?

I think I heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time at about 12 weeks. I think that was either my booking appointment or one I had very close afterwards.

unlikely, as it can be really hard to find . most MWs will listen in from about 16 weeks, as your uterus has risen up out of the pelvis a bit more and heartbeat will be easier to find, and the baby is bigger too.

she might not want to listen as it might be too hard to find, then you will worried unecessarily.

My MW listened for it during my booking appointment - but she implied it was only because we thought I was 14 weeks pg, rather than the usual 10-12 weeks so I don't know if they would do it normally - she couldn't hear it and it turned out that I was actually only 12 weeks pg after all.

I heard mine at 11 weeks - magic - but the midwife did emphasise that you don't always so not to worry if you don't

When I went for mine the MW had a feel around my tum and said 'hmm, we might be able to hear something' and by jiggers we did! This was at ten weeks, do I win?

So I think there's no harm asking, even if she's likely to say no.

Thanks for your responses
I'm certainly going to ask, she can only say no i suppose.

At my booking in appointment with my DS (who is now 4) the midwife listened for the heartbeat but couldn't find one so sent me for a scan that all turned out to be fine. This time at my booking in appointment (I am 19 weeks now) the midwife refused to listen for the heartbeat and said that they don't do that anymore because more often than not they can't find it and it causes stress. So I guess it all depends on the midwife that you get.
