Can I ask for a sweep at 40 weeks with my second? I don’t want to go overdue as I’m worried about the risks
thank you

Yes you can ask for one, it’s your body & choice.
However, Have you properly researched the risks and benefits of a sweep?
Have you researched how unreliable due dates are and the actual data about going ‘overdue’?

You can but there’s no evidence sweeps actually do what they’re supposed to. You can’t perform a sweep unless the cervix is already opening and if it’s already opening, labour is already on its way so you needn’t have bothered. They can be painful and cause infection though. You can ask for extra monitoring over 40 weeks though, the risk really only goes up after 42 weeks (37-42 weeks is normal full term, not 40 weeks, unless there’s other issues)
