Braxton Hicks

Can anyone share their experience of braxton hicks. I'm 25+4 and holy moly the tightenings tonight have been unreal. I'm guessing it's braxton hicks but should I expect these tightenings often? x

I don’t want to worry you, what I thought were braxton hicks was premature labour.

Strength of tightenings can indicate labour.

Are the tightenings regular? Or semi-regular? If so, it’s best to go in and get checked out.

Do you have a number for maternity triage? Call and ask for advice.

Thanks for replying. I began timing them when I started thinking they were a bit frequent. They were mainly 4 minutes apart for over an hour, then they calmed down to 10 minutes for a little while but now started back again and every 3 minutes. They aren't painful, it's like baby is trying to literally push out my belly, more uncomfortable than anything. Im trying hard to be calm and see how I go as I am so early, I know the outcome wouldn't be good x

That does sound like what was happening with me. do call.

The outcome is better if you’re in. There are lots of things they can do to help. Mine did stop and I’m home again.

I finally phoned at midnight after they got really intense. They told me to take paracetamol and phone back in an hour so 10 minutes away from that. Pain isn't as intense but the tightenings are very much still happening x

Sorry I meant to say I'm really glad yours have stopped for now, I really hope it stays that way for you xx

My BH were horrendous with my twins. I never had them with my DS.

I always went in to get them checked as you never know if it's pre term labour!

Onlythings · 05/12/2022 01:11

I hope things are going well for you x

A few days later the hospital thought I was in Labour, however things quietened down thank goodness. Lost my mucus plug a few days later however baby came at 41+5 x

@Mumlife91 ahh thanks for sharing, sounds like your BH started when you were at term already?
Like the OP, I still have a long way to go at 29 weeks and hoping these aren't a sign of early labour. Thatd be crazy.

I’ve had BH more or less non stop since 19 weeks. The midwives didn’t believe me at first as they said no one gets them that early. I saw a few posts on here that panicked me about early labour. Managed to persuade the unit to scan my cervix and it was long and closed which reassured me.

have maybe had a few days here and there without any BH but most days since 19 weeks they’ve been non stop throughout the day, not rhythmical but continuing all day . 37+1 and they’re more intense and frequent than ever but other than the discomfort they don’t worry me at all. Obviously everyone is different but hope this gives some reassurance. When I was searching mumsnet back at 19 weeks what freaked me out was no one was saying they had them non stop, just a few times a day.

NatGee · 24/08/2023 00:23

@Ljhunt thats reassuring thank you. i will mention it at my next appointment and ask for a scan. we are all so different arent we? some people experience them in one pregnancy and then not at all in a different one. Amazing how you recognised what they were that early on! in hindsight mine have begun some time ago, just not as frequently or intensely as in the last couple of weeks. I just thought it was baby stretching. hope you are feeling well? Youre on the home run, not long left to go :D
