Pregnancy mum guilt - eating lots of sweets

My urine tests with midwife have come back fine for sugar but I’ve been craving sugary sweets since my 2nd tri started. Especially love hearts!

I’m almost 18 weeks and wondering if I should try and stop or if this can cause issues with baby

Yes you should try and stop/reduce really.

High simple sugar intake during gestation may contribute to an excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) as well as to develop other pregnancy complications such as GDM, preeclampsia and preterm birth

Depends how much you’re getting through really.

I've been hitting the sugary snacks hard because I went off them completely in 1st Tri and now the cravings are back with a vengeance.

You'll always be able to find some "expert" somewhere who'll tell you that whatever it is you're doing is wrong.

Really the guidance is no different for pregnant women than anyone else - sugar isn't very good for you and we should all try to eat less of it. But let yourself off the hook for the extra guilt - people just really like making pregnant women feel bad about their food choices in the name of "helping".

@Melusina123 thank you

I guess my urine tests have come back fine the last couple of times I’ve had them so I probably shouldn’t worry but my craving is definitely love hearts and hot chocolates. I still eat my salads for lunch and have veggies with dinner x

@MRSDoos I ate a whole bag of candy kittens the other day, and currently working my way through a chocolate slice. 🤷‍♀️ I'm well aware it's not ideal, but we have to forego so much when pregnant for good reasons (alcohol, soft cheese, rollercoasters!) I'm inclined to just allow myself these small pleasures.

As long as you aren’t having a massive amount I wouldn’t worry too much. All I could stomach for 23 weeks was toast and fresh orange juice - so much sugar in that. Could handle anything else not even water so that’s all I drank. I’m surprised DS didn’t come out orange. My tests were always fine but they kept a close eye.

Omg you're fine. Women have sugary cravings in pregnancy all the time!

Enjoy the love hearts, it’s 40 weeks of your life that are generally not the easiest so take the joy you can and if your body says give me sugar go thank you for making me a baby, have a sweet!
