Brown discharge at 20 weeks - trying not to panic - help!

My 12 week scan results were fine, my bump is growing and I don't have cramps or pain. I'm due my 20 week scan on Monday afternoon but I've just noticed that I have some brown spotting today. I know that discharge is supposed to be white or clear at this stage though. Should I get it checked out tomorrow? I had a miscarriage last year at 8 weeks so I'm probably panicky because of that and so far this pregnancy has been going fine. If anyone can offer sound advice, I'd really appreciate it!

I wouldnt leave it at all, just in case, go and get checked out straight away if possible,

Lampi · 31/01/2008 20:38

You're right - thanks Chocolate Mummy. I'll try and go to the hospital in the morning and will let you know how it goes.

Try not to worry Lampi, it doesn't sound that worrying to me but as chocolatemummy said, better to get it checked. I had unexplained spotting in both pregnancies and thankfully everything was fine.

Lomond · 31/01/2008 20:43

I would get it checked out just to be on the safe side. Try not to worry too much (easier said than done, I know) think you would need to worry more with fresh blood.

Is there an EPU near you?

moljam · 31/01/2008 20:44

do you have an oncall midwife who can reassure you?

whomovedmychocolate · 31/01/2008 20:45

Have you had sex in the last three days by chance? This can irritate the cervix and cause spotting. But yes you do need to get it checked out.

Or cervical abrasions can show up at this point and cause the same.

cece · 31/01/2008 20:50

TBH I would go tonight and get checked out.

Lampi · 31/01/2008 21:09

Thanks...I haven't had sex in the last 3 days so it can't be that. I've just had another check and there's no discharge atall now and no fresh blood. I don't think there is an oncall midwife and I'm not keen on going to the hospital tonight as I'll end up waiting in a grotty London A&E department so I think I'll hang on in there and call the antenatal dept. and visit the EPU tomorrow morning (yes, there is one). This is just the kind of time I'd love a glass of wine to relax(I'm not drinking alcohol atall) but a bar of chocolate will do for now!

for you
let us know how you get on tomorrow

whomovedmychocolate · 31/01/2008 21:19

Lampi - glad it's stopped. It's probably nothing to worry about. I had similar at 22 weeks with DD - all was fine.

Lampi · 31/01/2008 21:25

that's reassuring - will keep you updated.x

They will see you on th elabour ward tonight. Phone them and see waht they say.

funnypeculiar · 31/01/2008 21:55

You're probably out of the EPU window (they tend to see people in early pregnancy only - I'd just ring your mw/labour ward direct.
Fwiw, I bled in both pregnancies (LOADS with ds, all pregnancy) & both pregnancies ended well. Well, dd is a little terror, but I don't think the bleeding is related
Oh, & brown blood = old blood = the best sort to have

Lampi · 01/02/2008 13:26

just a sneaky update from work - no more brown stuff today and the hospital wouldn't let me go there, isisting that I went to my GP which is what I did. He had a doppler so I heard the heartbeat , he took a swab and urine sample and advised that it was nothing to worry about as I have no pain, cramps etc. and it's stopped. That is reassuring enough for me, along with all your great advice. I'll let you know about the scan on Monday.

Glad things are looking ok!

The scan results were all normal and the sonographer reckons it's a girl We're just happy it's healthy and developing well. I've not hd any more brown discharge so it seems to have been one of those things. The placenta is low lying though so they'll give me another scan at 34 weeks to see if it's moved out the way - apparently in 90% of cases the placenta moves up naturally so I hope that happens with me otherwise you may end up seeing a few more little messages from me!

Aww that's great news very happy for you! Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, I miss having a bump

Hope that placenta moves up for you!
