Hi,

I’ve been for an early ultrasound today due to a previous PUL, I thought I was around 6 weeks but the ultrasound tech said I was measuring more around 5 weeks, I do have longer than average cycles at 30/31 days so I guess I was expecting to be further behind. Gestational sac and yolk sac both visible but no fetal pole. Is this normal? Does this ultrasound look ok for around 5 ish weeks? I really can’t settle until I see a heartbeat :(

I believe the fetal pole develops from 5.5 weeks so it may be that you are just too early. Are they going to rescan in a week or 2?

NSJ28 · 01/12/2022 12:45

No they have discharged me because they are satisfied it’s in the uterus which was the whole reason they were monitoring me. I’ve booked a private scan for in 2 weeks time

If you are 5 weeks then yes this looks normal. At 5.5 weeks my scan looked the same, but 6 weeks there was a fetal pole and heartbeat.

Smearywindowsagain · 01/12/2022 12:51

I don’t really see what the point is of scanning this early unless it’s suspected ectopic. What you see one day might not be what you see the next.

jellycat235 · 01/12/2022 15:53

@NSJ28 this also happened to me. I thought I was 6 weeks, but was actually 5, so they asked me to go back 10 days later and fetal pole plus heartbeat was there. They should really have offered you a follow up scan to confirm viability.

NSJ28 · 01/12/2022 16:34

I know I’m quite upset that they haven’t tbh :( they just said you’re all done with us now. I’m going to be panicking for the next 2 weeks when I have my private scan. Thank you for your positive experience :)

This happened to me also. They even told me to go home and miscarry naturally. Went back for a scan a week later and there was a heartbeat. Sometimes the days are just a little bit behind x

NSJ28 · 11/12/2022 11:33

Just an update for anyone who reads this, I went for a private scan a week later and there was a baby with a strong, consistent heartbeat :)

Hi Ladies

Great news about your developments.

I am in this position myself but my whole pregnancy is so confusing. First time I’ve been pregnant and following a PCOS diagnosis I was put on metformin. Took 1500mg of metformin for eight weeks and (quicker than I expected) I just found out I’m around 5-6 weeks pregnant!

Early pregnancy unit has taken me on as a patient given the PCOS diagnosis and i today had a TVS which showed the GS at 14mm and the Yolk (measurement unknown as I can’t find it on my notes). She said all looked healthy and she wasn’t concerned and my HCG is 9800 + so no need to continue to get bloods but I am now obviously anxious that my next scan (a week today) will still show no pole.

I might be early 5 weeks as whilst the scan was measuring me at 5w 5d, as I don’t have periods due to the PCOS the measurements are all we have to go on.

The success stories on here are keeping me going. Please keep them coming!!! Getting those two lines is the easy part, finding out so early is very hard especially when you’ve wanted this for so long.

Love to you all and a merry Christmas!

Ps. Attaching a photo of my 5w 5d scan incase it helps anyone else!

In same situation now. What was your outcome? Also measured 5w5 with gestational sac and yolk sac visable. No ones worried as my hcg is nearly at 10,000 and no bleeding or pain so just been told I can go private in 2 weeks if I wish to check for heartbeat. So exhausting

As its been a while and from experience of trawling through these kind of threads myself, i thought id give a final update for those going through this now and in the future. I am currently sat here cuddling my baby girl who's about to turn one 🥰

Awww so pleased for you!

Ellsx6 · 07/07/2024 10:16

@NSJ28 Thankyou so much for updating! This makes me feel better. In some way I feel like how can I be this lucky to fall pregnant in one month trying and not have a miscarriage or anything :( 12 more days until private scan!

This is wonderful news and given me so much hope! As I found your thread as I experienced the same today - also a PCOS sufferer! Congratulations! Wonderful news! x

@Bobakins my 'no fetal pole' scan this time 7 weeks ago was being naughty at their 12 week scan today bouncing around kicking legs wouldn't keep still!!! Those weeks of PUL then unknown viability were literally gruelling but this can happen and it seems quite often too! You've got this..be easy on yourself and try to keep busy💕
