How quickly have people got pregnant at 40?

I would like to have a third child. I have DD1 (10) and DD2 (6) already. My husband is very ambivalent about this prospect and works abroad a lot so is worried he would miss out on being with the baby. I feel like I might always regret at least not trying to have a third baby, but also that if we decide to in two years then it might not happen. I have been on the copper coil for six years since my youngest was born. With my previous pregnancies I found it easy to conceive. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and if so did you manage to conceive easily?

I conceived DD age 38 after 7 cycles. Conceived DS at 41 after 10 cycles.

Cycles as in months - not ivf cycles. Sorry if that was confusing!

Pinkywoo · 26/11/2022 12:42

4 months with DS1 when I was 38 and 9 months with DS2 when I was 41.

First baby conceived at 40, DH was 45, took less than 6 months of very occasional sex (he was away a lot at the time!). I think if we’d had sex more than twice a month it would’ve been sooner.

I was about 4 months shy of 40, but first month. To our mutual shock.

1st baby I conceived 1st time at 37, 2nd baby conceived after 3 months at 41. I appreciate we were really lucky 😊

meetmeinthespring · 26/11/2022 12:45

I conceived DS1 at 40 it took 9 cycles. TTC number 2 at 44, on cycle 11...maybe missed the boat 😊🙏
I turn 45 in August...
Love to hear any 44's conceiving

it was first month for us! I couldn’t believe it as assumed that it would take much longer!

RudsyFarmer · 26/11/2022 20:01

I conceived a disabled child at 40 but unfortunately had to terminate. Personally I wouldn’t set myself up for that kind of trauma if I already had two healthy children.

LovelyQuiche · 26/11/2022 20:03

Baby 1 conceived first go at 39, baby 2 conceived first go at 41

IamNannyPlum · 26/11/2022 20:03

I conceived my 2nd at 40 first time. It happens!

Aged 37 I was pregnant on the first cycle.

Age 39 it took five months, but then I was breastfeeding. I conceived the month before feeds were dropped altogether.

Started trying again just before my 41st birthday.

Age 42 I'm now pregnant again. But that's after 3 miscarriages. And this pregnancy has succeeded due to 16 weeks of progesterone.

It's definitely got harder.

Betsyboo87 · 26/11/2022 21:16

First conceived at 36, +3yrs trying and eventually via IVF. Second conceived at 39, naturally in one night

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 26/11/2022 21:21

Baby 1 conceived 2nd month at 38, baby 2 conceived 1st month at 41.
Thar was the easy bit, all downhill after that.

Orangebadger · 26/11/2022 21:24

I conceived my 1st at 39 straight away. My 2nd took considerably longer. We started TTC No 2 when I was 41. No trouble conceiving but lots of losses.

Whataretheodds · 26/11/2022 21:30

This is not what you asked, but if he's only ambivalent now do you think he's going to be eager for a newborn in 2 years?

Statistically you will have a smaller probability of pregnancy each month, and a higher risk of complications.
I say that as a 41 year old TTC after miscarriage.

lifehappens12 · 28/11/2022 09:55

I conceived three times after 40 and had two miscarriages.
1st - one month (lost baby)
2nd - 6 months (lost baby)
3rd - 3 months

I saw a gynaecologist after the first loss and was very clear conception after 40 isn't easy. You don't necessarily ovulate each month and then sometimes you pressed two eggs (which is why twins are common).

She prescribed letrozole for me which I used for my last two pregnancies
