Protein in urine - what to do. Help

Hi guys. I've been given some urine testing strips to test for protein. I've checked my urine tonight and think there's some protein in it. I can remember if I have to go to triage or not for that amount of protein.

I'd give triage a call and explain what you are seeing. They will probably test again when you go up to be checked 🤗 How many weeks are you? @Spacebears

That looks like a trace amount to me. I wouldn't be worried about it personally. How far along are you? It's common in pregnancy for the kidneys to kick out a small amount of protein. Have you been asked to monitor for protein? If not I really wouldn't bother and would leave it to your midwife. I've had 9 children, including pre eclampsia with my first - I've never monitored protein but did do my blood pressure for my last 3 pregnancies - mainly because I'm prone to "white coat syndrome" and my blood pressure can spike very high when I'm in a hospital setting.

I'm 24 weeks pregnant. My midwife asked me to test weekly as I was having high blood pressure. That's settled now. Was due to anxiety.

I have a midwife appointment on Friday so maybe wait until then? I've done my blood pressure and it's fine. No other symptoms

Was it a ‘clean catch’? Ie. A true mid stream sample? Any discharge in a urine sample can cause a positive protein result.

Only someone with your notes and history in front of them can make the call as to whether a trace amount of protein is significant to you, but generally if your BP has been ok and you aren’t symptomatic of pre-eclampsia (headaches, visual disturbances, and excessive swelling) a trace amount of protein isn’t something I’d jump up and down about.

urrrgh46 · 22/11/2022 21:51

Ah ok! That makes sense. Possibly check with your midwife tomorrow? If your BP is fine I can't see shes be worried about trace protein though.

Spacebears · 22/11/2022 21:56

No I wasn't a clean catch. I peed in a bottle my midwife never told me to catch it midstream. I have had a lot of extra discharge today to be honest.

It’s not too much to be worried about on its own. I had trace protein in the last weeks of pregnancy with no high blood pressure and they weren’t worried. I had a risk for preeclampsia from low Papp-a, but didn’t get it.

you had some high blood pressure plus you’re only 24 weeks, so I’d say test every day and take that Friday app, I don’t think you need to go sooner. But if you test every day you’ll have more data to give them. Take pics too.

it’s something to be monitored daily from now on, along with your blood pressure.

did you have low Papp-a too at the combined test? That should be taken into consideration too.
