Hello,

I had a recurrent uti a few weeks back and was prescribed ciprofloxacin 250mg BD for five days. I finished the course but I am now a bit worried, as I tested positive today. I am now worried as cipro is not to be prescribed during pregnancy.

My cycle is very regular and is every 28 days. Which would put my ovulation date at around the 3rd of Nov. For reference I took the antibiotics on the 13th of Nov.
I am not too sure if any damage is possible this early on?

I am trying to not overthink, I will book a doctors appointment for this week. Until then I was hoping for some words of reassurance (if possible). Or to hear from people who have also taken or known of someone to of taken cipro in early pregnancy.
Thank you again.

Like most drugs, ciprofloxaxin has not been tested on pregnant women and therefore there is no absolute data available. However, the data that is available shows no harm to foetuses when the pregnant woman has taken this antibiotic.
In very early pregnancy the placenta is not yet formed and so there is no blood exchange with mum.
Try not to worry, the data shows you are as safe as anyone can think you can be from this antibiotic

Hi OP. I’m not a dr, midwife or pharmacist, but this link is from the French website CRAT which is a database covering the relative safety/danger of medicines and substances during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Drs and pharmacists use it to check out current advice on treatments for pregnant and breastfeeding women. According to CRAT, you have nothing to worry about, there is no known connection between the use of this antibiotic and problems for an unborn child.
Interestingly it also says this class of antibiotics are no longer to be used for cystitis!

I had terrible sinusitis and took an antibiotic before I knew I was pg with DD. I can't remember what it was (18 years ago) but I got all the data sheets and it was inconclusive - however all turned out fine. I do remember that anxiety though, but as PP has said when it's so early there's no placenta or anything. There are lots of things in everyday life that are potentially hazardous, it's impossible to take out all risks. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

What I'm most taken by is your assertion you'll 'book a doctor's appointment this week'.

🤔

Most drugs aren't tested on pregnant woman. It doesn't mean it's unsafe it just hasn't had enough testing.

I'm sure it'll be fine but understand you're worried.
