Omeprazole during pregnancy. Doses and reassurance.

Hi everyone. I've had to start taking omeprazole due to gastritis, essentially chronic pain flaring up in my stomach/ duodenum due to previous stomach issues. I've been on 20mg a day for two weeks, I'm 20+1 now. It is helping and means I can eat more variety and mostly the pain is gone but it does sometimes come back and still need to be careful with what I eat.

Doctor said to take it for 4 weeks to hopefully heal the inflammation and I'm hoping to go off it then. But I know I might need to continue 😔

Dose This morning I spewed about 20 min after taking the omeprazole. I was worried it hadn't absorbed and terrified of a pain filled day so after a quick Google I took another 20mg tab. Can anyone reassure me that up to 40mg in one sitting is ok in pregnancy? A few months back when I was prescribed before pregnant the doctor said 40 is ok but I haven't been able to ask about it wrt pregnancy. I wouldn't do it every day, it was just because of the spewing today .

Also got those who have taken omeprazole during pregnancy, what dose do you normally take? And how long? If you've had your babies were they fine? I'm just a bit nervous, I know it's meant to be safe but I'm not on any other meds and these things do worry me.

Any reassurance or advice would be appreciated xx

I have been prescribed 40mg omeprezole daily, although that was starting from week 36, not sure if how far along you are makes a difference. I would think one double dose when you have thrown up the first lot anyway won't do any harm

This is the best source of information on medicines in pregnancy. Pharmacists and doctors use this.

If it’s reassuring, I’m 20 weeks, a doctor, and taking omeprazole. It’s drastically decreased my gaviscon use and improved my sleep and vomiting. I wish I’d started it sooner.

I took Omeprazole daily in my 4th and 5th pregnancies after hideous heartburn with 1-3. With my 3rd vomiting until she was born at 42wks.

Babies now 3 and 17m. No side effects. I found over the counter stuff utterly useless bit Omeprazole just stopped it completely.

Thank you all!
@Lapin387 I think I remember you from an April due date group? But haven't seen you post in a while. Hope you're well. Thanks for the reassurance. Are you also taking 20mg? Would 40mg be ok sometimes, if needed?

I took this during pregnancy and I might be misremembering but I think it was given as standard to everyone having a section. Baby was fine, goes without saying.

I've been on lansoprazole 30mg for over 10 years and all through my pregnancy. It's pretty much the same stuff and my doctor said it's fine

I take 20mg of omeprazole twice a day and have since before I got pregnant. GP said it was fine to continue now I’m pregnant
