16 Weeks and bleeding a little bit ... please reassure me!

Hey,

I was 16 weeks preg yesterday, went to see midwife, listened to heartbeat and everything was hunky dory.

Then today I woke up and I'm bleeding! Dark blood, and not that much, but with a bit of clotting in it.

I called the hospital, went in and they listened to baby's heartbeat and scanned him/her and all seemed fine, but they couldn't really say if it was the start of something bad or not.

So I thought I'd reach out for some advice. How likely is it to be a miscarriage? I thought that the baby would die before a miscarriage started, or can a miscarriage cause the baby's death?

Has anyone else had this experience? Any anecdote or info anyone has would be much appreciated.

I don't know if this will be much help or not, but I had a tiny bleed at 16 weeks as well, everything was absolutely fine.

I hope everything is OK Can you insist on a scan? Maybe a private one if not? Just to put your mind at rest.

BorgLady · 30/01/2008 17:57

I had a scan at the hospital today and the baby was fine. I am just worried that it means it won't be soon!

Thanks for replying so quickly, I'm a bit fraught at the moment.

Funny, baby was a total surprise and we've been worried how we'll cope, but when something like this happens, you really find out how much you want it.

Thank you for being so kind.

i had lots of little bleeds throughout my first pregnancy and DS was absolutely fine, born at 39 +1, i was induced becasue there was some concern re my placenta.......but he was fine and a good healthy weight. i was monitored more closely. if it happens again, or you have any pains or fluid loss, you must call the MW / hospital immediately......

NatalieJane · 30/01/2008 18:03

Sorry, I was meant to say can you insist on another scan...

Kids, DH, tea, all on the go at the moment!

Hello Glad the scan went well.

My anecdotes/gathered info:
I bled throughout both my pg. With ds (4 next month), I bled from about week 6 - usually 2/3 times a week. The most I went without a bleed was 3 weeks. Pink, red, brown, with and without clots, you name it I was variously diagnosed with - placenta praevia, low lying placenta, likely miscarriage
& cervical erosions. Turns out the later is what I have - basically (iirc) in some women, the cervix becomes very easily bruised in pg, as there is much higher blood flow. This causes little scabs, which then also bleed easily. They are entirely benign, but a PITA
I bled much less with dd (couple of times around 12 weeks, I think)

Apparently, bleeding in pg is very common (esp in first 12 weeks or so) - I think something like 1 in 4/5 women bleed. Often they never ascertain the reason, and it may not happen again. IME midwives were reassuring - doctors are more used to seeing the 'bad news' stories - I had a couple of very negative consultant appts, where they told me to expect to lose the baby.

Obviously, miscarriage is always a risk, but there are LOTS of other reasons. It is bloody terrifying - you do just (natually) assume the worst, but it ain't necessarily so

HTH!

funnypeculiar · 30/01/2008 18:11

But, to agree with lulumama, do keep an eye on things, and don't be afraid to contact them if you have any concerns/feel anything changes. I spent most of ds' pregnancy in EPUs/doctors waiting rooms/hospital etc
OTOH, I was very confident in dealing with medicos by the time I went into labour (not to scare you, but at 36 weeks )

BorgLady · 30/01/2008 18:22

Thanks everyone, that does make me feel much better.

Not to be too graphic, but I have been VERY sore internally, too uncomfortable for sex which is unlike me. Perhaps that's been the problem and this is another symptom.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, at least I know things are fine for now.

Thank you all again, chatting to people really does help!

please get checked for infections- could be causing tenderness and bleeding x

funnypeculiar · 30/01/2008 20:58

I assume you mentioned that at the appt? Definately worth checking it out. I didn't have any discomfort, have to say, other than some cramping feelings

NB cervical erosion bleeding can be triggered off my sex - so if you had a shag just before the bleeding that would fit. (sure the midwife asked you about that)

BorgLady · 03/02/2008 19:04

I didn't mention that I was sore to the doctor, actually. I was just so keen for them to get to the scan and heartbeat bit that I didn't really go into details.

I told her that I hadn't had sex for a while, as obviously she suggested that as a cause for the bleeding.

Should I go and see my GP and ask to be checked out? The bleeding has stopped now thankfully, but I think I would still be too sore for sex.

I just put it down to my body protesting because I've been really ill for ages with morning sickness.

I don't think I have a bladder infection as I haven't had any burning pains when I go to the loo.

Thanks for all your advice, I'd never have thought of infections without you and I know that can be a bit dodgy in pregnancy.

I bled at 6.5 weeks and 8.5 weeks, they put it down to a vascular cervix. Awful though and I spent the entire 9 months checking my knickers for blood!!

x

BorgLady · 03/02/2008 19:12

LOL I've been doing the same thing every five minutes since Wed!

BorgLady- have you been to see doc yet? I have had several bladder infections in both my pregnancies and not had burning or pain when peeing...always worth checking for.
You saying it 'would be too sore for sex' makes me think that something's going on. Could be another type of infection...I certainly would get a same day appointment (TODAY!) and get checked out asap. x
