Im a high school teacher and a colleague is taking retirement this year. He is part time meaning a part time position will be coming up from april which is rare at my school. I am pregnant and due in March .

I would love to return after maternity leave part time but does anyone know the logistics of whether I can request to return part time without it affecting my maternity pay? I was thinking they could employ a permanent full time member of staff to cover my current hours and a part time maternity cover and then I return part time but would this mean I’d have to take part time maternity pay

I am planing to discuss with the head but wanted to hear if anyone had similar stories

So you want the part time role to be yours from April?

I would be on maternity leave from March and hope to return from maternity leave part time

usually people can request to return after maternity leave part time and so wouldve got paid maternity leave in full
however as I would be requesting to return part time before my maternity leave has began I wondered if it would affect my maternity pay

Yeah it would effect your pay. You should get around it by requesting for flexible working a few months before coming back from mat leave

It wouldn’t affect your pay. Maternity pay is worked out over an average of your wage for 8 weeks from about 15 weeks I think (or thereabouts).

Just double checked and it’s from around week 17-25 (8 weeks before your qualifying week which is 15 weeks before your due date). As long as you’re full time over that period you’re fine

Your maternity pay is worked out prior to your leave starting (using wages in weeks 17-25 of pregnancy) so returning to work part time after maternity leave will not affect it.
