10 weeks pregnant scan dating 6 weeks

This is my 3rd pregnancy... unexpectedly aged over 40. All was going well and I thought I was about 10 weeks pregnant but wasnt 100% sure about my dates as wasnt planning a pregnancy.

I was referred to the early pregnancy unit as I started bleeding moderately for a few hours a couple of days ago. This then tailed off to just very light bleeding. Still ongoing now but light bleeding (more brown) and very mild pain. At the scan they haven't given me any conclusive result but it's all been extremely negative. They think development stopped at about 6 weeks. I wasn't given much detail about what they saw but they did say they can see a twin pregnancy and bleeding into one of the sacs with signs of ?yolk breakdown. I've been given a repeat scan in a week so I'm wondering if that means there is any hope at all this may not be a missed miscarriage or is the repeat scan just a formality? Or if its maybe the case of just 1 twin being lost?

Still feel very pregnant and so far no sign of a full miscarriage starting. Has anyone experienced anything similar? it would really help to hear others thoughts?

Did they see any heartbeat?
I had a scan last week when I should have been 9 weeks. I knew straight away that I wasn't looking at a 9 week pregnancy and the sonographer said it measured around 6 weeks but no sign of a heartbeat. They said it might be too early and my dates could have been wrong but I knew they weren't as it was monitered ovulation as part of fertility treatment. They will usually give you a further scan in a week to 10 days to check for any growth and unfortunately all you can do is wait.
If there was a heartbeat, your chances are very high that it will continue as a successful pregnancy. There is also a chance that your dates are wrong and you will see growth at your next scan.
Sorry you are going through this, unfortunately all you can do is wait. It's a hard time.

Oh thank you for such a quick reply. sorry to hear youre going through a similar experience. They havent mentioned heart beat at all which sounds ridiculous for them not to have said either way. Only that it looks like development stopped a few weeks ago, but I suppose that's presuming the dates I gave were right. Feeling really stupid as I have so many questions I should have asked but I was so shocked I couldn't think straight. Feeling extra emotional as a Dr came to speak after the scan saying its a twin pregnancy ....but with me having bleeding as well as scan appearance they think it's an early miscarriage. You're right can only wait it out now, but can't help hold on to a tiny chance it could be ok.
