Hey all I don't know if this is silly or not, but I just got my BFP today! So happy!

So here's my predicament. So, I am booked in to the hairdressers (and so is my sister) for Friday to have my hair highlighted. I don't want to tell my family about my pregnancy until Christmas if I can!

But now I'm worried about the hair dye etc at such an early stage of pregnancy. If I cancel she'll know somethings up, especially cos my hair is really overdue!

I am very fair naturally and I get blonde highlights for context.

Ugh. Can anyone help !?

I wouldn't have an issue (2 DC's and coloured hair throughout). Remember if you're having could colour will not be placed and scalp anyhow

whitramp · 12/11/2022 11:16

Should read 'if you're having foils colour won't be on scalp'

Advice is conflicting but I avoided having my hair dyed til after 12 weeks just because you have more risk of having a reaction while your body is going through so many changes. My hair dressers asks pregnant ladies to do a skin test for this reason x

Irishwifey · 12/11/2022 12:03

Thanks guys, ya it would be highlights so not directly on the scalp.

I really really need it done but more so than that my sister and mom will be like why isn't she getting her hair done that's so strange. And I really don't want to tell them until I feel ready. It's so hard to know, I don't want to put anything at risk . It's such a hard predicament.

Highlights are less risky. Bleach shouldn’t be touching your scalp or skin anyway. But ultimately it is your choice weighing up the potential risk.

Thank you. I suppose I should have also phrased it asking for others experiences too and if they themselves avoided for the first 12 weeks.

I did avoid it for the first 12 weeks but not based on any actual advice, it was just what I was comfortable with. The NHS advice is that hair colour is safe during pregnancy but if it will cause you anxiety cancel the appointment and come up with some excuse, saving money or something.

CSR721 · 12/11/2022 15:41

Ive bleached mine throughout, it's not been an issue. My sil is my hairdresser, she's also pregnant, not been an issue for her either x

CSR721 · 12/11/2022 15:42

Ps I did not avoid for the first 12 weeks, pregnancy has been completely healthy x

should be fine getting highlights , I had some done when I was 7 weeks and didn't know. then I've had it done twice since ..only thing is one of the times I went I wanted some lilac in it and it turned blue coz of my hormones 😂 (this was also the day we were going to the gender scan so thought it was a sign) but it wasn't coz it turned out to be a girl lol
