Scan in Glasgow

Hi there

I just read some posts on this forum - they were over 1 and 1/2 years old but refered to the quality of ante-natal care in Glasgow, particularly the fact that only one scan is offered on the NHS in the city hospitals. Is anyone else from the area and worried about this?

I live in Linthouse, Glasgow, and a wee bit depressed and isolated sums up how I'm feeling at the moment. Unbelievably, I don't even know my due date as I had no menstrual period for a year prior to becoming pregnant and I'm still waiting for the hospital (Royal Alexandra in Paisley) to send me the invite for my first scan. So, until I get the scan, I'm left looking at my expanding belly and guessing how far along I am - probably around 12, could be even 14 weeks. Unbelievable. I had a midwife's appointment at my surgery 2 weeks ago, she felt my belly and said "Well, I can't feel the baby so you are less than 20 weeks!!" and then told me to come back after my first scan.

I lived and worked in Japan for 8 years and the ante-natal care out there is really good. My friends there are amazed that I haven't had a scan yet - it's one of the first things they do on confirming a pregnancy. Just before I came to Glasgow, I worked in Bangladesh for two years....I am starting to wonder whether I'd have been better off there, LOL. Sorry for moaning so much. I know I'll feel better once I've had my dates confirmed, I just feel in total limbo now.

i don't understand, have you asked your GP? you should have been scanned before now... perhaps you've been lost somewhere in the system? you need to get onto your GP and get them to chase it for you. your midwife at teh surgery sounds like an idiot.
as for my care... it was excellent at the princess royal imo.
congratulations, by the way.

I had to chase the ante-natal in Dunfermline for my 12 week scan. I eventually got the letter through confirming the scan the day before the actual scan! I'd just gotten lost in the system but one quite 2 minute phone call sorted everything out.

I say give them a call and put your mind at rest.

Hi Fibie

I live in east kilbride and yes in glasgow and lanarkshire you only get one scan (14wks) to date the pregnancy.

with my 1st i had major surgery during the pregnancy and was scanned every 2weeks to check on ds's growth - he a happy and healthy little boy now thanks to the excellent care provided by wishaw general!

i discussed the lack of the anomaly scan with my gp and she said to discuss this with the consultant at the 14wk scan and if you provide a good enough reason why you want the scan, you should get it. the reasons are: check placental position (cant do at 14wks), check developement (in case inuterine surgery/surgery immediately after birth is needed), in line with NICE guidelines 2004 and SIGN recommendations and RCM best practice statement.

however should your consultant still refuse, she told me to go the nuffield in great western road for the private anomaly scan (about £200) as they will give results to your consultant.

hope this all makes sense and good luck with your pregnancy

I had dd at Queens Mothers 2 years ago and had a scan at 6 weeks to confirm pregnancy and then at 12 weeks.
I was 38 and had slightly raised BP and I was concerned about the lack of baby moving around at 20 weeks so I was scanned roughly every 4 week thereafter.

My GP and community midwife were very active in obtaining these for me. I am not sure if this made a difference.

I would tell the mw I was unhappy with her response, lets face it some nurses/midwives can be very insensitive.I am a nurse in Glasgow and would always take seriously feedback from patients.
Don't know much about RA I'm afraid, I delivered at Queen Mums.
Congratulations.

i had zillions of scans because of medical stuff but 2 years ago the PRM were offering a scan at 12 weeks and 20 weeks as standard.

bobsmum · 31/01/2008 17:29

PRM now only offering 12-14 week scan as standard. But I get one at 30 weeks as I've hd a previous section - that's a new policy since I had dd there in '05. Fab hospital experience there though too

Friend just had twins last week at RA - she lives hours away, but went there because of their specialists. She got water birth too - sounds like it was great.

Agree with others that in Scotland, most places only offer the one scan at 12-14 weeks.

I had both DDs at RAH in (2000 & 2004) had three scans with DD1 12weeks, 20weeks and 34 weeks and 2 with DD2 at 12 weeks and 20 weeks. Phone the RAH and ask. Also paid for a Nuchal Scan with DD2

Hi there

Thanks for the helpful replies. It is good to know that there are other options. I saw my doctor on Wednesday. She is excellent although it transpired that there had been a misunderstanding between us, as it was not the RAH to which she is referring me but the Princess Royal (HUGE relief there, as Paisley did seem far ). She was surprised I had not heard from them, so she called (or arranged for her receptionist to call) and was told that a contact from the hospital would call me today. By late afternoon I had not heard, called the hospital myself and was told that the named contact was away all day.I asked how that person was planning to call me if she was away all day and was told "I cannot account for her movements; you'll have to wait until she gets back tomorrow annd ask her."

Better luck when I call tomorrow I hope!

All the best and thanks again.
