When to fit car seat base in car

Just curious when others have/are planning on fitting their car seat base in the car? Not the actual car seat - that won’t be going in until I’m heading to hospital in labour, just the isofix base.

Can’t remember when I did it last time, but I remember it being fiddly.

37 weeks now.

I'd do it now, I went into labour at 38 weeks- the base will be fine to be driven around for a bit

Regenbogen22 · 09/11/2022 15:26

Surely whenever you want to! 😜why not now?

pbdr · 09/11/2022 17:08

I went into labour at 36+6 and hadn't done it yet, so ended up wrestling with it before driving to the hospital. 10 minutes of swearing and stress when it turned out not to be as straightforward as I expected! I could have done without that, I'd do it now if I were you.

I'm 3 days overdue and we still haven't done ours 😂🙊

DappledThings · 09/11/2022 20:49

We put the base and the seat into the car as soon as we'd bought it so about 30 weeks. Just cluttered up the house otherwise. Didn't seem any point trying to find somewhere to store it other than the place it was ultimately going to live.

Just do it now. Why wouldn’t you?!

TheTeddyBears · 09/11/2022 23:04

Do it sooner than later as quite often it can be quite difficult to set it up. Sometimes they go in easily but most of the time not so easy! Better to donut and then worry about it.

I got caught out with my second as she came 3 wks early despite first being induced at 41wks. The car seat isofix was not set up. Worse than that we cldnt find the newborn insert for the car seat. I thought I had plenty time to look for it and boom she arrived. I had to order a new one on Amazon with next day delivery so we cld bring her home!

Thanks all,

I will do it at the weekend I think. DH is away until then and it’s quite heavy to lift and wrestle with.

CSR721 - think you need to get yours in the car asap!

pbdr - what a nightmare. Not what you need when in labour.

Just something to think of if your car was to have a bump before baby born even if someone knocked into you whilst stationary the car seat and isofix became unusable as damage cannot bd tested so I would do a trial run and make sure your partner is confident in fitting if for when you are picked up. Good luck xx

With my first baby a couple of weeks before. With baby number 2 DH had to leave me after I'd given birth to sort the car seat and base out. He also has to reassemble the cot as that hasn't been done.
It takes 2 seconds to fit an isofix base though, there's no need to fit it weeks before you pop the car seat on.

BretonBlue · 10/11/2022 08:06

It doesn’t always take two seconds, depending on your base. We had a maxi cosi base with an upright post which took some adjusting to get the right length for the angle of the back seat and required the kind of contortions I couldn’t do at 38 weeks pregnant!

pollyfd · 10/11/2022 09:57

DH did it before he came to collect us from the hospital.
We've always had the maxi cosi one which has been really easy to fit.
