Weight gain in first trimester

I know everyone is different but my midwife said I should expect to gain around 4lbs in the first trimester, I’m in my 12th week now and I’ve lost 2lbs. I’ve had nausea but not been sick once so it can’t be down to that. I’ve snacked a lot and some days eaten more than usual, I’ve also barely exercised as been so exhausted and I went to the gym nearly everyday pre pregnancy so I was definitely expecting to have gained weight.
I’m quite worried and now starting to panic the baby isn’t growing properly. I did have a scan at 8 but that was 4 weeks ago now. Is this normal or should I be worried?

Dont worry! I had hyperemesis until 19 weeks and lost like half a stone! I was so worried! You'll gain in back in the 2nd and 3rd trimester!

You would have gained some weight OP from the baby, placenta, fluids etc - you just lost some of your own weight so it’s not obvious. Happened to me as well in 1st trimester - I also only had nausea and ate mainly carbs, and didn’t move much while being very active pre-pregnancy, but still I suppose I was eating more with the exercise before, and the body was now spending the energy on growing LO as well. I started gaining weight quickly after about week 12. You’ll gain it all back in no time.

Being nauseous will definitely have affected what you ate, you might not have realised how much.

I lost 8 lbs in the first 10 weeks, only sick a couple of times but could barely eat through chronic nausea which finally eased around 16 weeks. I’ve put 7lbs back on so still less than my starting weight.

I lost 10lb during my first trimester and am only just starting to put it back on at 16 weeks! My dating scan showed baby seems to be growing fine and at a midwife appointment today they had a strong heartbeat. Same thing happened in my last (healthy) pregnancy. Speak to your midwife if worried, but in all likelihood you'll be fine. Good luck for Friday.

I weighed the same on my induction date as I did at my booking appointment, I don't think they worry too much unless you are underweight to begin with Smile

Thanks all , that’s definitely made me feel better

Please don't worry! It won't have affected baby's growth :) I ate like an absolute horse in the 1st trimester because I had constant nausea that demanded to be fed with carbs and sugar 24/7. I put in 13 pounds in 7 weeks... I'm 26 weeks now and I dread to think how much I weigh. I don't intend to find out!

My baby boy is perfectly healthy and measuring pretty small, he's on the 20th centile or something. So nothing to do with the amount of weight I've put on - If it was, he'd be a monster baby.

You'll be fine.
