Morning after pill panic

Hey, completely new to this but just need some advice..

Me and partner had unprotected sex on the 16th October, it was my fertile window and I was due to ovulate- I took morning after pill over 3 days later as I wasn’t sure it would even work if I had already ovulated..

2 weeks later after taking it I had awful headaches and feeling quite sick and run down, I did a test and negative.. possibly way too early? then last Tuesday I had one bit of spotting and then absolutely nothing, I now just have really achey boobs and feeling so hungry- almost PMS symptoms?

I have another pregnancy test arriving today but could this just be the after effects of the morning after pill? Any help would be appreciated :)

Not sure why you waited 3 days to take the MAP? That was never going to make it more effective.

Either you're about to get your period (late?) or your pregnant. The symptoms you describe could be either. Make sure you take the pregnancy test properly with first morning urine and you'll find out.

If you wouldn't be happy about being pregnant you can speak to Marie Stopes International. They offer counselling.

*you're!

Depending which version of the MAP you took, it may not have been as effective after waiting 3 days, I believe one can be taken up to 3 days after, the other one is 5 but they're most effective if taken the morning after, hence the name. All you can do is wait and test again

ChocolateSkye23 · 07/11/2022 08:55

I only waited 3 days as I didn’t have time to go out and get it (super busy lifestyle) and after reading it’s not effective during ovulation I was worried about taking it and it messing up my cycle. Which was completely stupid of me because it’s done exactly that anyway! I took ellaone so you can take it up to 5 days, I know the earlier the better.

I’ve never had spotting before, my periods are like clockwork, so when I had the most tiny bit of spotting that threw me. I’m now 5 days late but I know MAP can throw you off for a whole cycle.. and I did get a negative test last week.

A negative test does not necessarily mean negative. It just means there is no detectable hcg, so your test last week may have been too soon. It doesn't mean you are pregnant either obvs. You just need to wait and see. Today is more likely to be accurate. I hope you get the result you want.

This happened to me with the morning after pill but it was an implantation bleed and I was pregnant. Sorry I know that's not what you want to hear but it's a distinct possibility. Of course all symptoms could also point to a late period so I hope that's the case for you.

ChocolateSkye23 · 07/11/2022 10:22

@TheFormidableMrsC did you have the implantation bleed around 2 1/2 weeks after taking MAP? It was literally the smallest amount of blood and I thought it was the start of AF but nothing now! Did you have any side effects of taking MAP? Mine only seem to have really come on these last few days

@ChocolateSkye23 It was a long time ago, she's 24 now and I've never been more relieved it didn't work. I was panicked and it was the wrong decision for me looking back but there you go and that's not what you asked! I vaguely recall it being about two weeks after that I had a tiny bleed which I thought was the start of a period but nothing happened. I had bloating and very sore boobs. It became apparent very quickly that I was in fact pregnant.

Morning after pill didn’t work for me and I took it 10 hours after sex as soon as pharmacy opened in the morning. Currently 33weeks.

Didn’t work for my friend either who took it 24hours after sex x

Mindymomo · 07/11/2022 20:32

The MAP will mess your periods and can cause spotting and tummy aches, but obviously you won’t know for sure until you take a test. I’ve taken MAP a few times and so have my friends and none of us went on to test pregnant.

ChocolateSkye23 · 08/11/2022 08:19

Did a pregnancy test and negative!

Did a pregnancy test and negative!

Good news for you! Hopefully your period won't be far behind! I'd double up on contraception going forward so you don't have this again.

Mindymomo · 08/11/2022 19:04

Good news, but slightly sad, sorry.

ChocolateSkye23 · 08/11/2022 21:09

@Mindymomo not slightly sad at all, couldn’t be more relieved! AF will come when it’s ready :)

Took the morning after pill within 24hrs and did a pregnancy test today and it's positive. Can't believe it, have used it before and it's always worked. Totally gutted. Already have two kids and am 39, arrrgggghhh!
