2 early scans - one dated ahead, one dated behind

hi ladies, please help! I am confused as I have had 2 early scans, both with heartbeats but the first (NHS) one 10 days ago measured 6w4d (LMP put me at 5w6d then) and today’s (private) scan measured 7w0d. According to last period, should be 7w2d at least. First scan baby measured 6.5mm, today’s one around 9.5mm. That’s only 3mm seemingly in 10 days. I’m super worried due to 2 early m/c, nearly 41, Overweight. Both scans showed a strong heart flicker and second sonographer was pretty useless: have to wait another 9 days for the next scan but I’d love to know if any other ladies have experienced this??
thank you

Was the private abdominal or transvaginal? Early scans are super hard to measure, esp if abdominal and esp if you are in the obese range or higher . I completely understand the worry (I've a history of loss and infertility and currently in trimester 1) but unfortunately it's a watch and wait situation.

Early scans aren’t particularly reliable when it comes to dating the pregnancy. You’ll have a much clearer indication at your 12wk scan if you can sit tight and wait.

@IWillBeWaxingAnOwl
thanks for this.
both were transvaginal scans.
not obese but am overweight.
have 2 kids but they’re 7 and 9 so had them at a safer age

@PointyMcguire
thanks for your post. Yes this is what I’ve read - to watch and wait, but I have been wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation

Hey, we just had the same thing.
First scan put me at 6 weeks 2 days bang on where I estimated then I went in at what I thought was 7 weeks and they put me back to 6 weeks 5 days.
They said early on they give a 5 day window for inaccurate dating and it’s pretty common.
For reference I’m 32, first pregnancy and a 24.9 BMI.
My measurements were 2.06cm and then 2.36cm.
No heartbeat on first scan and 122bpm on the second.

Didn't want to read and run. I've also had a history of mc so know how anxious this time can be. One of my mc had slow growth between dates but always more than a week out. My current baby (4 weeks!) also measured off, one minute ahead, one minute behind, but usually by a few days only. I think the thing to focus on here is your baby has progressed which is a great sign! Like others have said the measurements are so small it'd human error really! Best of wishes xx

@Notacluewhatimdoingasalways
thank you for your message. Why would you read and run?! When the growth was slow with yours, was there a strong heartbeat?

Sorry I just meant I didn't want to not comment when I've been where you are :) maybe the wrong turn of phrase !

Yes a strong heartbeat at the first couple of scans (with some growth but not as much as expected) then (if I remember correctly) a week where we had maybe 2 days growth but still strong heartbeat..then a week later they said no heartbeat. But as I say with that miscarriage the dates were always way way off...for example my first scan lmp should have been 9 weeks and baby measured around 7. They tried to convince me I had conceived later which I knew was physically impossible as my husband was out of the country when they were saying. I hope this makes sense.

With my last baby his dates were never right early on but only by a few days, never more than a week. Our first scan he was measuring ahead of my lmp date then second at 10 weeks he measured behind (I think maybe 9 and 3 or something similar). I got myself in a right panic thinking I was repeating history and mcarrying again, but he's here now and perfect.

I know it messes with your mind so much doesn't it, I constantly was on here or googling to find answers. I really hope you get a positive outcome.

@Notacluewhatimdoingasalways
thanks for your message - makes a bit more sense to me now :) Congrats on your little boy!
yup constantly worrying and feeling anxious. The weird thing is I was measuring 6w4d on 26 Oct when I was 5w6d from last menstrual period (6.5mm) then yesterday when I was 7w2d according to LMP I was measuring 7w0d at scan (9.6mm).
the sonographer was useless and hardly gave me any reassurance. I was worried because it felt as though in 10 days baby had only grown 3.1mm.
Honestly though, I have no idea. I’m feeling more sick since yesterday, more breast soreness, tiredness, food aversions and prior to yesterday I was complaining about not having enough symptoms!!
It’s such a difficult time and I really have no clue how this is going to turn out.
I’m so sorry you went through all that but so pleased you have your rainbow baby. I don’t think I could go through this again and will need to accept my lot if this doesn’t pan out.

@Notacluewhatimdoingasalways
oh I should mention, LMP was 15 Sept BUT I weirdly ovulated late that cycle, like 1-2 Oct so on days 15-16 of my 29 day cycle (norm 14). Still though, the lack of growth worries me. Aside from the lack of growth with yours, did you have any other symptoms eg spotting??

OP posts:
IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 06/11/2022 19:52

If you ovulated 1-2 Oct then you are 7 weeks or so? In which case I would say the first measurement was wrong and artificially ahead. My scan from 5+2 weeks ish says 6+4 based on sac size (but definitely isnt as no hb etc), then our next one, 3 weeks later was 8+4. As others have said, theres a hefty inaccuracy on early scans (+/- 5 days). I know its so hard to wait. I also have a loss and infertility history and am finding the first trimester v hard. I hope the next scan is what you expect (around 9 weeks) and helps to reassure you.

Notacluewhatimdoingasalways · 06/11/2022 20:01

No other symptoms at all. I actually had a bleed with both my pregnancies that turned out fine though!

Its so hard isn't it, the wait is just horrendous because you just want to know either way. I searched and searched for answers but sadly only time will tell. I don't want to say it will all be fine for you because no one knows at this point :-( but I would say from what you've said looking at it from an outsiders view it seems more positive than negative. If you hadn't had your first scan then your last scan would be about right. Like I say this is more what happened with our son. His dates eventually became pretty much bang on for my lmp. Early scans are so variable even down to the machine, and then they are measuring a tiny little bean.

I know what you mean about not wanting to try again, been there, I thought I'd never have children. And I too found the medical staff pretty unreassuring, I guess they see it every day and know its a case of waiting to see but I found them very matter of fact and sometimes blasé.

CKBM · 06/11/2022 21:40

Thank you. Yes the wait is hard :(

CKBM · 06/11/2022 21:42

Thanks for trying to reassure me. The kicker is that they measured baby both times rather than the sac, and I just can’t shake the thought that a 3+mm growth just isn’t right in 10 days. Will keep myself busy and keep praying 🙏🏽

I went for my 12wk scan when I was 11+6 but measured 11+3, I'm back in next week just to get rechecked they couldn't get all measurements given I was measuring slightly earlier than my dates. I think it's fairly common to be moved around by a few days give or take.

CKBM · 07/11/2022 23:52

@lmw88
