Re: Possible urine infection?

Hi

I am currently 16 weeks and 3 days. I suspect that I may have a urine infection (slight discomfort in belly and back yesterday)but it isn't as bad today. I have a routine scan with the consultant on Thursday afternoon and they also test my urine and take my blood pressure. Am I okay waiting until then to see someone or should I try and get a doctors appointment earlier? I am assuming that the dip stick test thingy they do at the antenatal appointment will pick up a urine infection if there is one?

Any advice gratefully received. I need to stop stressing....

If it isn't difficult for you to see the GP earlier, why not just go and put your mind at rest/get the antibiotics if you need them?

I'd probably wait myself but it would depend how uncomfortable I was and I do have two small children already that I'd have to take to the GP with me and that always makes me think twice!

I'm not sure the dip tests they do at ante-natal appointments will pick up a urine infection, to be honest. Apart from anything else, urine infection don't always show up on dip tests - you need to have it sent to the lab for a culture.

I'd go the GP - the sooner these things are caught and treated, the better.

As the others say, go to GP if it makes you feel better, really no sense waiting if you're going to worry (which I always do!) or are in any discomfort.
Dip stick test should work, that's why they use it (along with picking up presence of protein etc). I've had two UTIs while pregnant and both have been picked up on by the dip stick test. However as Wigwambam says they still like to send a sample away to a lab though so they can see what sort of bacteria it is. This takes a few days. Mine have been the common, non-dangerous type but have been given antibiotics anyway as it's not the nicest feeling to have a urine infection!
Hope you feel better soon and don't worry if you can't get an appointment before Thursday, from what I hear it's a UTI that's left untreated for weeks that is dangerous, not a few days. Of course if any pain gets worse then you must force yourself in! Take care. x

Hi

Thanks for your replies. I am relieved to find that an infection can be picked up by the dip stick test. I think I will wait until Thurs as I am not in any discomfort now. I am wondering whether my jeans where just too tight yesterday! I do seem to have ballooned all of a sudden. Do you think this could have caused the pain? I would not have been able to get to the doctors sooner than tomorrow anyway. I will obviously tell the midwife to check for urine infection on Thursday.

Thanks again.
Sarah
