6 week early scan gestation sac and yolk sac but no embryo

Hi!
had a early scan today at 6 weeks. I was so anxious beforehand and left feeling really worried. I had the scan because I was worried about ectopic which is what my mum and my sister have had before. Fortunately that was ruled out. They could only see gestation sac and yolk sac but no embryo and he said to me he can’t confirm viability and maybe embryo isn’t growing or could be too early. Just wondering if others have experienced this? He wasn’t very reassuring to me and didn’t really spend time to talk me through things after as I didn’t really understand! but maybe that’s because I was crying lol!

How certain are you about the ovulation date? Even a day at this point can make all the difference.

I had an early scan at 5weeks and all they could see was a thickening of the uterus (that wasn’t the term used but it just looked like a black circle on the scan) went back a week later and they could see yolk sac and what they thought was maybe the beginnings of a heartbeat. I was certain of my dates as had been tracking ovulation. My baby is now lying next to me. It’s such a worrying time and I sympathise with you. Was it a private or nhs scan?

Thanks for your reply! That’s a really good point, I stupidly didn’t think about that, I may be a day or two out so maybe a bit earlier than 6 weeks. That’s so lovely to hear your baby is with you, so so pleased for you!! yeah such a worrying time!! And I tend to be an over worrier anyway as had precious health problems which probs doesn’t help! This was a private scan and I don’t want to go back there as I just didn’t feel comfortable or reassured I just was on the verge of tears the whole time as no one really spoke to me it was so quiet which felt weird and made me so much more anxious! Really hope it’s just too early for me atm for anything to show up. Not sure whether to just wait for the 12 week scan on nhs or book a private one somewhere else in a couple of weeks.

It depends how you feel, I know I personally wouldn’t be able to wait till 12 weeks and I’d book another one but you may feel differently. Maybe wait and see how you feel in a couple of weeks? Or when you speak to the midwife explain what’s happened and they might give you another early scan, it’s a long shot but worth asking.

I had a scan through EPU at what i believed would be 6 weeks due to bleeeing, they measured me at 5+3 and found a gestational sac and yolk sac and nothing else, they rescanned me two weeks later but it was the most horrible wait and the longest 2 week of my life!
When we went back they dated me back to what i originally thought and we saw a little blob with a heartbeat 😅

The nurse at the time explained that even one day can make all the difference at such an early stage, i have had a few scans so far due to bleeds but im 14+2 now and feeling a bit more confident..
I hope all is well for you! But id not be able to wait until the NHS 12 week scan, if anything it might put your mind at ease 🙂

You guys are right in that waiting for the 12 week scan is going to be way too hard to do!!! doesn’t help being a super impatient person either.
thanks for your replies it feels so much better knowing I’m not being crazy and other people have had similar experiences or have felt the same sort of anxiety although I’d rather no one would have to feel like this! Must have been amazing seeing your little baby and heartbeat!! So pleased for you. Sorry to hear about your bleeds but glad you’re feeling more confident now it defo sounds positive and I’m sending you lots of positive vibes for the rest of your pregnancy :)
when I went for the scan they said my gestational sac was average 13mm so I’m hoping there will be something to see soon if I book another scan before the 12 week one. Like you say maybe lots can change in a matter or a few days. Just going to try and not let it worry me over the next couple of weeks and hope it all works out!

I’m sorry you’re going through this it’s such an anxious time!
I had timed my scan just a bit early and I had another scan a week later and they could confirm the pregnancy, saw the fetal pole and there was a heart beat (my little girl has just turned 2)
I would definitely give it a bit longer and have another scan as it is still very early days. Really hope it works out for you sending you positivity! Let us know how you get on.

@Josephine2 thankyou so much for replying! It's an awfully anxious time isn't it! I had an early scan today due to 3 previous losses (thought I was 6 + 1 weeks) and the sonographer said I'm measuring 5 +5 weeks with visible sac and yolk sack but no fetal pole or heartbeat yet. They've booked me in for a rescan in 2 weeks time but that just feels so long to wait! I appreciate you replying with a positive outcome, really helps thankyou 🥹
