I went to triage today for some bleeding and pain I had - all seems to have turned out okay

However midwife did say I had protein in my urine so would get it checked but I haven't heard anything.

Other than pre-eclampsia, what else could this mean? I completely didn't ask in my daze of worry about everything else that had happened.

I only had my 25 week app last Tuesday too where my urine was tested so in 4 days it's gone from fine to having protein.

Next midwife app is in 2 weeks time, should I try and get my urine dipped again before then?

High amounts of protein in urine is normally an infection of some kind such as a UTI, kidney infection or pre eclampsia in some cases.

I think if it was high enough to indicate pre eclampsia they would have contacted you ASAP.

Hope you're okay x

I had protein in my urine a couple of weeks back. They sent it off to the lab and it was fine.

It can actually come from a contaminated sample or the actual pot they tested your urine in wasn't sterile.

Mine was a UTI. Had antibiotics for 3 days and it cleared up x x

PinkButtercups · 29/10/2022 21:39

Also they likely sent it off to the lab and as far as I am aware they grow it for two days x

CSR721 · 29/10/2022 21:40

I'll also add, she said I'd only hear if there was an issue. I got a call from Dr a couple days later to collect antibiotic prescription. If you don't hear anything, I'd assume all is well x

Thank you all for your replies

I've had no other symptoms of a UTI so I don't think it's that!

Have had constant headaches which I know can be a sign of pre eclampsia but thankfully seems to have subsided a bit today

I'll wait to see if they call :)

@2020firsttimemum I didn't have any symptoms either, I wouldn't have known I had it if it weren't for the sample testing x

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 30/10/2022 16:02

If there is any discharge in the sample it can cause the sample to test positive for protein.

Update - had a call from the midwife today in regards to the results (I'd honestly forgotten!)

She said that they need to do further testing as the levels were higher than they'd like so I've got bloods and another urine test tomorrow.

She also mentioned that the swab showed that I am currently strep b positive so that's another thing to add to the list at the moment.

Any advice for either or these things?

Regarding strep b you will give birth in the hospital because as soon as you go into labour you need IV AB's x

I had bleeding at around 20 weeks and it turned out I had thrush, so you could have a UTI.

2020firsttimemum · 07/11/2022 14:52

@Cotswoldmama oh I thought they could confirm thrush without doing bloods?!

Ugh annoying!

I went to hospital and they took a swab. I went in with bleeding but no other symptoms.
