Clear liquid from Nipples- and pain when cold.

Hi guys.

I'm 29W and expecting my first, so I've got no idea what I'm doing!
Last night and today I noticed a bit of very clear watery and sticky liquid coming out of my Nipples- both of them. It happened when I was slightly putting pressure on them (I tend to give the boob a light massage after being in bra all day). I didn't see any yellow, but it was such a tiny amount it's hard to tell. To me, it looked like water, but sticky. Is this colostrum? I thought that was more yellowy?
They've also been SUPER sore if they're even mildly cold. Like the nipple pain you get when the twins are freezing, except they're really not that cold.

Just wondering if any of you guys have had this before. Is it normal?!

Yes this will be colostrum. It can be clear or yellow and varies woman to woman, just as the colour of breastmilk does too. I had the same from around 25 weeks.

I also had the very painful nipples sensation when they got the slightest bit cold. It was bizarre, but did pass relatively quickly, within a week or two.

Yep clear colostrum by the sounds of it. The pain is intense isn't it. I had to wear a big coat to do the shopping because the fridge aisles killed me. Lasted through the latter stages of pregnancy and a month or so of then beginning of breastfeeding.

You can harvest colostrum in the later stages and keep it in your freezer if it's something you're interested in. I'd do it for a second child I think. You can normally get 1ml syringes from your MW once you're far on enough.

Sounds like colostrum. I don't know if this is actually factual or not but my midwife said not to try to encourage it/ breast massage prior to 36wks as there's some speculation that it can trigger early labour. I don't think they know for certain how common it is or how much stimulation it would take but just something to consider.

Definitely colostrum, human milk comes in all colours! And cold definitely made mine feel more sore. Get some syringes and collect up any leaks, then from 36/36 weeks you can hand express and collect it - useful stuff to have even if you don’t use after birth - use for vaccines, when poorly etc.

How big are your breasts and are you wearing a decent supportive bra? I had this and it was because my lymph nodes weren’t draining fluid properly, they were retaining too much water. The bras I were wearing weren’t giving me the correct support. I’m big and ended up going to a specialist bra company recommended by the hospital.

Oh wow thanks guys. I forgot to check for responses!
@Cw112 oh really? Shoot. I'll keep that in mind and speak to my MW at the next appointment.
@AliceMcK I'm big (and getting bigger it seems) but I don't know my actual bra size any more as I wear sports/dance type bras that come in S/M/L etc. Ive done that for years because I have real trouble with the straps etc because of my dislocating joints. And they feel like a godsend at the moment. I'll speak to my MW about it, too. Maybe you're on to something there!

And also thanks everyone for reassuring me about the sore nips. I only nipped out to the front at about 5.30 to check the Halloween lights. And had to sit by the fire afterwards because it felt like the nips had been cut off!
