6 weeks pregnant- heavy bleeding and clots, heartbeat next day?

I woke up early hours of the morning to watery blood in my underwear and when I wiped there was a lot of bright red blood with quite large clots. I had no pain. I assumed that this was the start of a miscarriage. I spoke to my GP the same morning who also thought it was likely that but to test again in a weeks time.

As the day went on I had no more heavy bleeding and only had brown spotting when I wiped. I wore a pad all day and nothing came out on the pads. I booked a private scan for the following morning and was expecting to hear that I had miscarried. They found a fetus measuring 6 weeks with a heartbeat. The scan was not able to identify any free fluid/ blood in my uterus etc. It is now 2 days later and I still have brown spotting when I wipe but still have no pain and am still having strong positives when i test.

I am still very worried as there is no indication as to what caused the bleeding/clots and was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy and baby?

Couldn't read and run. I had bleeding during both pregnancies although not large clots, however my friend did. Big clots and she was convinced she was miscarrying. However her baby girl is totally healthy and they never ever found a cause x

@newtolineofduty thank you for your reply, that's put my mind at ease a bit. So glad it worked out well for you and your friend x

Thank you. Pregnancy is so tough. If it were me I'd book another scan for a couple of weeks time just for some extra reassurance. I found I needed to have something to work towards to cope with the bleeding x

It really is such a constant worry. I was already thinking about booking another private scan in a couple of weeks time. That is a good way to look at it as something to work towards. Thanks so much again for replying x

EPAU should see you - let your gp know that you had the private scan and saw a heartbeat, they should refer you on for a scan in a week or so. That'll help get all your info in one place and save you some money. Fingers tightly crossed for you!

I had something similar a wee bit further along. The scan showed one strong heartbeat and one empty sack where I'd evidently miscarried one of a pair of embryos.

The remaining pregnancy was uncomplicated and I had a healthy baby.

Yes with my first pregnancy I had this at 6 weeks pregnant, scanned 2 days later in EPU and had strong heartbeat. No cause found for bleeding. She is now a healthy 4 year old.
Currently 32 weeks pregnant with DD2 and had bleeding with loads of clots at 8 weeks pregnant, contraction like pains for half an hour and was convinced I'd miscarried. GP thought the same but I couldn't get an EPU scan for 4 days due to bank holiday and that also meant the private place was shut too. Again, strong heartbeat on scan with no cause found. Pregnancy still ongoing but no further issues and all has gone well so far.

Wishing you all the best, I know it's so awful waiting out these few weeks, speak to GP again to get a referral to EPU (early pregnancy unit) and they should scan you.

Yes, this happened to me. There was a LOT of blood and clots. He is 16 today! I still remember how scary it was. Sending you lots of love.

WingBingo · 27/10/2022 20:52

I had this, it was a haematoma (sp?)

everything was absolutely fine.

raevans · 27/10/2022 21:20

Thank you all for the responses and sharing experiences, definitely feeling a little calmer now. I'll get back onto the GP and hopefully they'll refer me to the EPU for a scan. Thank you all again!!! Xx

This happened to me at 7 weeks (and also 3 weeks but I thought that was my period!) As PP mentioned it was a sub chorionic hematoma (I may have spelt that wrong!) Quite common and usually harmless but terrifying none the less! I went for a private scan and they saw heartbeat and could see where the hematoma had been but that it was all drained now. I had a LOT of blood and clots and severe cramping and feared the worst but all is well so far at 9 weeks. I hope this is the same for you, particularly if you've not had any bleeding since and your tests are still strong - best of luck!

@RaRaRaspberryKing thanks for your response. It really is terrifying! So glad you're you are doing well. Yes all the heavy bleeding has stopped and just have brown spotting which I think is starting to ease up. I'm going to chat to my GP again tomorrow. Best of luck to you too! X
