Worried about alcohol consumption before

Hello, I’ve just found out I am almost 4 weeks pg, around 8dpo I had a Buck’s Fizz and half a cider at different times throughout the day. On 9dpo I had another Buck’s Fizz. Each time I drank very slowly and each occasion I had food before, during and after. I am besides myself with worry that I may have done damage. I can not relax, eat, take my mind off this. I am sure implantation happened just before the alcohol. I am trying to reassure myself with the following points (but I still can’t stop worrying):

  • I consumed minimal alcohol which I believe would’ve been metabolised by the liver and kidneys.
  • Embryo doesn’t have a significant connection with blood yet and if it does I am hoping that there would be little to no alcohol after metabolisation.
  • I know (have read that) many women have also drank (and a lot more) before they know and things have been okay.
  • I have called dozens of helplines and midwives who have all said not to worry, one even admitting she did the same!
  • I am worried cells maybe damaged but have also read 2 things: they are able to regenerate and fix themselves and a lot of alcohol has to be consumed to do any damage.

I am trying to tell myself that if something is wrong then it could be down to many different factors as well, not just the alcohol!

If anyone has any words of support, have spoke to medical professionals themselves/have been through the same situation then please help!

I hope that every pregnancy has been okay for everyone and if you are also pregnant, huge congratulations!

thank you for reading this

It's fine.

Perpop · 26/10/2022 10:24

Its so early, everything will be fine!

Dacadactyl · 26/10/2022 10:27

Try not to worry OP. I will admit that i dont know what 8 and 9 dpo means but i went out on the absolute razz for weekends on end before finding it i was pregnant with my eldest. She is 100% fine and top of her class.

Perpop · 26/10/2022 10:27

I just reread and you sound so distressed. Please trust the medical professionals and women who have been through this and allow yourself to rest over it. That amount of alcohol will not harm cells in your body at such an early stage.

I drank 3 bottle of Prosecco at Christmas with friends and found out the next day I was pregnant. I’ve a happy, healthy 1 year old and a consultant friend told me at the time not to worry. You and baby will be fine. Rest, be happy, enjoy & trust it’ll be ok ❤️

Thank you so much for this. It is really reassuring to hear that this is so very common. I really am finding it difficult to accept and feel better but I think time will help! I need to stop googling too 😔 I am so pleased to hear about your happy story, congratulations ❤️

Thank you for your comment! It seems like this is very very common!!! Not sure why one midwife said I was the first to admit this to her tho 😔🤔 Dpo is days past ovulation (so I rekon I drank just after implantation 😩). What does OP mean?

Please calm down. This isn't doing you any good. It happens to lots of people. Unaware they are pregnant, a few drunks.
The damage that gets done to the fetus from severe drinking, is NOT what has happened to you. Please be calm.

Let's face it loads of babies are conceived during drunken sex! Blush

littlelionwoman · 26/10/2022 10:40

This level of stress will be infinitely worse for you and your pregnancy than half a cider and a Buck's Fizz. If you are unable to trust in the professionals and are still hugely struggling then I would advise seeking support for your mental health as such extreme anxiety is not typical or healthy.

Thanks for clearing up the meaning of dpo.

OP means original poster, so that'd be you.

Don't overthink the midwife's comment, she was just making conversation. And I honestly think that more women than not have had a drink before finding out they are pregnant.

Like I say, i had been partying like a wild woman possessed before finding out i was expecting (i was at uni when my daughter was born, just to give you an idea of the levels of drinking) She's nearly 16 now and on course for 9s in her GCSEs.

A one off of a few drinks is fine in my experience.

milawops · 26/10/2022 10:48

The weekend before I found out I was pregnant with my first I went on a very drunken weekend away. The night my second was conceived was at the end of an all day drinking session that involved at least 8 shorts and a bottle of red. Obviously as soon as I knew I was pregnant I didn't drink until after they were born. They are both fine.

Unfortunately waiting list for therapies are months :-( but each day I am feeling slightly better regarding this issue. I think time will help and also once I speak to my parents I will feel better! Will the stress have an affect now or if it carries on?

Please please please don’t stress. My pregnancy was unplanned and I was also drinking unaware that I was pregnant. I am sure it is the case with a lot of ladies. Problems occur through much higher and sustained consumption. You had a really minimal amount, Bucks fizz is pretty low alcohol. Your baby will be absolutely fine.

@rose19rose , I 'm sure you've got nothing to worry.

I had mmc recently and kept bleeding slightly almost continuously. This came after another one few month ago. During this month, saying we tried to conceive would be an exaggeration, as we were both emotionally drained and it seemed like additional stress. So on Saturday me and my husband went through one bottle of wine and one of prosecco (me more than him as he fell asleep and I remained awake crying and drinking)... on Monday I had a positive test, I was shocked. Kind ladies on the forum shared their experience and reassured everything should be ok. Now I am having the blood tests to confirm the pregnancy.

The conclusion is you should just enjoy your pregnancy. The amount of alchool you had is really low. I have many friends that had a glass of wine occasionally through out their pregnancies. Best of luck!

Looplee123 · 26/10/2022 14:16

I got a negative test at 11dpo and stupidly drank 3 doubles that evening thinking I was out. Got my bfp at 12dpo and I’m currently 23 weeks with all scans showing a healthy boy
