good afternoon people

my friend and I were discussing the damages of smoking while pregnant (she’s pregnant and smokes) and looking online, it stood out to be that the damage can even be passed to the 3rd generation!!! I don’t have the links but sure it’s on Google. It said if your grandma smoked while pregnant with a girl, it can cause her grandchildren to later develop asthma and/or autism due to potential dna damage. I wonder if it could be true so I’d like to ask the outcomes for anyone who had a smoking grandma and the effects on her grandkids?? I ask bcuz if it’s true, it shows the powerful effects of smoking in pregnancy. I personally think it’s so selfish to smoke while pregnant but my friend thinks the study is bogus

Not sure on the truth but I agree smoking when pregnant is so selfish and makes me so mad!!

@OrcaBlondie i agree! I don’t understand why u would put a cigarette to your mouth when you’re carrying a little baby

The studies aren't bogus but the effect sizes are small. Much bigger risks are a small baby, pregnancy loss, bleeding, lung damage in utero and preterm labour!l.

I think there has been research that suggest a correlation, but that the amount/ quality of data isn't enough to say with much certainty yet.

Anecdotally my mother smoked when pregnant with me and I have 2 autistic children. But there's also family history of autism on both mine and DH side, so genetically it was already quite likely. The problem is that without a massive sample it's impossible to determine how the different risk factors interact.

Autism is not caused by smoking OP.... Blush

True. A part of me did think the study was a stretch but I suppose it could make sense

The effects of starvation have been shown to be passed on for four generations so this wouldn’t surprise me. We know more about epigenetics now.
Look on pubmed. If the study is there it’s not bogus.

I'm pretty sure when a female baby is born, she's born with all her eggs. So when your grandmother carried your mother, the egg that led to you being born was in your mother's ovary, inside your grandmothers womb?! So I can see how it can have a knock on effect

Yeah I thought so
