Nursery - Oil-Based Paint

Hello! I am 31 weeks and we just had our nursery painted. Our painter confused two paint cans and painted part of our nursery with oil-based paint instead of VOC free paint.

All I see online is how terrible oil-based paint is during pregnancy and in general, so I am very worried.

Does anyone have advice on what to do now? We are airing out the house by leaving windows open and I have gone to live with a friend for the week. How long should I stay away?

I did consult my doctor and they acted like it was no big deal, which I know is not true, but I did appreciate that comfort.

Oh that's bad on the part of the painter. How did they manage that! It can take weeks for an oil based paint to dry fully and stop off gassing. If you can smell it it's still drying and off gassing. Ventilation and time are the only things you can do.

Have you asked the painter if they can remove it? Is it on the walls or the woodwork?

I personally wouldn't want my new baby in a room with recently applied oil based paint. Others will have different views of course.

I wouldn't have a baby in that room at all. He needs to come and rectify it asap.

He literally just brought the wrong can, very unfortunate, I know.

It’s on built in shelving, so there really isn’t a way to remove it without releasing more chemicals into the air by sanding it.

The baby won’t be living in that room for another 8 months (born in two months and then 6 months sleeping in our room), so I’m hoping by then it will be safe?

My main concern right now is when it’s safe for me to go back into the home. My husband went by today and said the rest of the house smells fine, only the nursery smells bad, but again I’m still nervous.
