Scanning earlier than thought

So I had to have an early scan yesterday as I had some spotting/bleeding.
I had a internal scan as well as external, the sonographer had said she could see it external but wasn’t as clear!
During the internal, I was reassured that the spotting/bleeding wasn’t anything to be concerned about and I just have a few haematomas and that it’s really very common, she showed me the pockets on the scan and in a strange sense I feel relieved after seeing them!
However I’ve also been left very in the dark as she told me that I’m either earlier on that I thought or that the fetus has actually stopped growing. She said that she couldn’t really tell me that this point and would have to book me in again in 10 days. Explained that if in 10 days it was still the same, no heartbeat and no growth, she’d have to terminate the pregnancy, obviously this was a complete and utter shock to me!
She tried to explain that as I had not long come off the pill and had only had one proper period after coming off that I could have in fact just ovulated a lot later than normal and this could result in it only measuring around 6 weeks as supposed to 8 but I just don’t feel very reassured.
Has anyone else had this experience? I’m really trying not to worry and just hoping she’s right, I am just earlier but it just feels as though my whole life has been turned upside down right now!

Hi Katie, sorry to hear this, early pregnancy is so stressful. How far along did you think you are, based on your last period? If it's before 6 weeks then it's not uncommon for them to not be able to see anything. Did they say how far you're measuring based on sac or yolk? Sending love and luck your way x

Hello, thanks for replying, it most certainly is! How I wish I was one of these 16 year olds that get pregnant no problems haha!
based on last period thought I was 8 weeks and 4 days but they’re saying it’s looking like around 5 weeks to 6 weeks. She said it’s not very common for a heartbeat at 6 weeks so that’s why I’ve got another in 10 days to see if there’s growth and a heartbeat. Those dates would make sense from conception but not from the last period.
Thanks again for your reply x

Hi @KatieG95 I really hope that in 10 days there is growth for you and good news. Unfortunately approx 1 in 4 pregnancies end and the vast majority end before 8 weeks. As I said, I hope you aren't in that category, but there are many women who have been in the same position you are now and/or experienced a loss. I know the wait is excruciating x

If the dates make sense from conception then don't count yourself out yet ❤️ I have 2 friends who were measuring 2 weeks behind at a very early scan like this, one caught up by her 12 week scan, and one was dated back by 2 weeks - her conception dates were later than usual so it didn't line up with LMP. Both were fine and went on to have healthy babies. On the other hand, something similar happened to me very recently. Had an early scan at 8 weeks and was measuring 5+6. I did get to see a heartbeat but I was so so sure of my dates I knew something wasn't right. Unfortunately 2 weeks later I found out I'd had a missed miscarriage. If it's possible your conception dates are later then hopefully all will be well! I knew those dates were impossible for me personally. Sending hope and love your way!

The dates work if we go on conception I’d be looking at 6+1 but I am concerned because I’ve read a lot that says at 6 weeks there should be a faint heartbeat and she said she had nothing! It’s really hard to keep that optimism isn’t it?
Thank you for sharing your story with me, you’re amazing being so open!
I’m just trying to hope and not think negatively.
Thanks again! X

@KatieG95 hello. Sorry to bring this post up again but I don't suppose you had an update?

I know this was a few years ago now but did everything go okay with your pregnancy? Currently in the same boat and like you I was on the pill. Had a period on the 19th February which lasted 4 days and by this point me and other half were in Turkey for my birthday where we got engaged. Got home from Turkey the week of the 3rd March, tested positive the 19th April! Based off my last period I should be 9 weeks but when I did a clear blue on the 4th of April I was only showing 2-3 weeks. Had an early scan yesterday to show baby was only showing as 5 weeks and either I've got my dates wrong or it could be a missed miscarriage and baby stopped growing at 5 weeks! So I've got to go back next week to find out if little bean is growing and I'm so anxious
