Drop in HCG - 6 weeks - Anyone had similar?

Hi All

I’m currently 6+1 and in hospital for infection (unrelated to pregnancy). I had a scan yesterday at 6+0 and saw heartbeat, though measured at around 5+5.

I’ve been told today that my HCG dropped from 33,000 yesterday to 28,000 today. My bloods are being redone but I’m really worried.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Whether positive or negative outcomes, I’d rather know what’s realistic to expect.

Thank you x

Just in case it benefits anyone to know, the Dr at hospital has said they they won’t repeat bloods as they don’t consider monitoring HCG to be an effective tool to monitor the pregnancy.

Also, they won’t repeat the scan until a week’s time as they need around that time to measure the difference (either good or bad)

I’ll update then in case it helps anyone else x

Hi.
I had dropping HCG and it signified miscarriages for me.

The hospital asked me to go back every 2 -3 days for bloods.
After doing this and consistent dropping in HCG after 3 visits, I declined to go any more because it seemed a complete waste of my time, their time and NHS money to have tests that told me what I already knew.
Scans were offered every 7-10 days. Within this time, nature did its thing and the follow up scan was only relevant if I had symptoms that suggested retained products.
If no symptoms then I always cancelled the scan.

You probably gather from my reply that I’m a very practical logical person so the tests needed to provide me with information rather than to reassure me emotionally.
After multiple miscarriages, I kinda know the routine.
Good luck to you, I hope you have a positive outcome.

Hi @ColinRobinsonsfamiliar thank you for taking the time to reply. I’m sorry to hear of your experience and I hope that things are well for you otherwise.

I am someone who processes things quite well once I know what I’m dealing with but am not very good at being in the grey zone! Unless things take a turn for the worse, which of course I hope they do not, this is going to be a very long week’s wait for me x

@KJHWW can you please share how it went? Best wishes to you.

KJHWW · 09/10/2022 18:07

Hi @Ana12345 , I had the scan a week later as scheduled and everything seemed as it should and there was a heartbeat.

They measured at 6+6, whereas my calculations were 7+0 - just one day difference so I was happy with that. I still have bouts of worry whenever I feel crampy etc but so far things seem ok. I’m now 8+2

hope that helps xx

@KJHWW very happy for you! Fingers crossed

@KJHWW hey I know this is an old post but I’m literally going through the exact same thing my hcg levels where doubling perfectly got up to 24700 then 5 days later they were 20,000 however on the day of the last hcg we had our scan I am 6weeks and we saw a perfect little heartbeat….I am so worried and going out my mind please can you tell me if your pregnancy progressed ? Thank you xx

KJHWW · 21/03/2023 06:20

@Alicegolden it’s such a worrying time, I can understand you going out of your mind. I know that I was! For me, everything has gone well so far. I’m now 31+6 with baby kicking away.

It didn’t help me much but during the time I was concerned re HCG I was told by a consultant that it really is not an exact science and the figures can fluctuate a little. Also, at least at my hospital they refuse to use it as a measure of progression/viability for that reason, and actually refused to do a follow up blood test on me… my point is to please try to not worry (impossible task!)

Keeping fingers crossed for you xx

@KJHWW thank you so much for getting back to me. I felt so alone for a minute wondering why this is happening to me and have been up all night in every inch of the internet. I’m so happy for you that your little one is kicking away that’s just amazing news. My partner is telling me please not to worry but like you say how not to. I have seen some similar posts with success stories however yours was identical to mine the drop in numbers the amount of weeks i am. So I am starting to think that maybe dropping hcg is more common than previously believed. We go for a scan on Friday to check what’s what so not to long to wait and I’ve decided that if we see heart beat again then no further blood tests as it’s just ruining me. Thank you again so much for getting back to me i wish you all the best with your little babe and how exciting xx p.s I feel extremely pregnant my symptoms are so serve the nausea and peeing every 5 mins I pray this is a good sign

Alicegolden · 21/03/2023 12:03

@KJHWW just to say thank you again. We did go for another scan today as we were not sure and the heartbeat was even stronger today….. I’m not doing any bloods any more I can’t go through it. Hopfully our baby is going to make it into our Arms xx
