hi guys

quick question!
was wondering when anyones perkod started after giving birth while breastfeeding?

i know breastfeeding stops you getting your period and takes months and months for it to come back so you basically can’t get pregnant since you don’t ovulate. I have introduced around 2 bottles a day which probably won’t make much difference!

just wanted to know how long it took for ladies to get their first period after birth whilst breastfeeding? X

Four months only. I felt a bit cheated actually, I thought I'd have months more without a period.

I got pregnant again three months later, even though I was still almost exclusively breastfeeding.

So beware! Introducing a couple of bottles definitely can make a difference. Once your baby is not breastfeeding as much overnight it can be enough to trigger ovulation, something to do with night time hormone levels.

It certainly was with me. I knew my cycle had returned and was happy to conceive again quickly, but if you aren't you really do need reliable contraception.

9 months pretty much on the dot for me. Was still breastfeeding throughout the day/night, although I gave one bottle of formula before bed.

6 months with my first and 8 months with my second. Just as an FYI, you can ovulate without a period. I am a midwife and have cared for multiple women who have got pregnant without having a period between babies. Breastfeeding should not be relied upon for contraception. Any protection is lost when anything else is introduced including solids, formula, even dummies!

17 months. I bf for ages, and it might've taken longer, but I tried to stop bf so much as wanted to ttc.

Before it returned, I could sort of 'feel' things returning, iyswim. I could feel things in my tummy, almost felt like baby movements (massively freaked me out...).

Mine came back after two months. Had only just stopped pp bleeding. And I was exclusively breastfeeding. Totally ripped off!

PopGoesBang · 22/09/2022 04:28

Dd 7 weeks old, ebf and period rocked up yesterday. Still, better than last time when I only got to 5 weeks with first dd. I'd happily of waited months and months!

15 months

My first period came along at the usual 28ish day point. For me, however, bf was a struggle and I never got a good supply going so maybe it's got something to do with that.

First period was a nightmare - almost took myself to a&e the flow was so heavy but it settled after 24hrs and then menstral cycle was totally back to normal.

Suma2021 · 22/09/2022 04:52

Had a really light period at 9 months - felt like things were "building up" for ages before this so was surprised it was so light.
Missed 10 month period.
Then it returned at 11 months and I felt like my cycle was normal again.

I was still breastfeeding lots, but did really step up weaning around 10 months.

my postpartum bleeding (lochia) went on for 5-6 weeks but lighter and lighter each day then it stopped. after a few days i had bright red bleeding for around 4 days. not too heavy to begin with then gradually getting lighter to almost spotting! normally my periods are heavy on first two days then gradually lighter. i told my HV and she said it sounds like my period has returned even though j was just breastfeeding at the time! 😳

it’s been around 14 days after so just to make sure i got a ovulation test and it was negative. does that mean it wasn’t my period because mid cycle im not ovulating? and yes don’t worry, since HV has said that it is my period i am being careful!

4dc here, 2 bottle fed and 2 breast fed, my periods restarted 6/7 weeks pp. I fell pregnant 4 months pp whilst exclusively breast feeding dc3.

k80pie · 22/09/2022 06:06

Sounds almost identical to me OP!

MiddleParking · 22/09/2022 06:11

Second time round mine only came back at 11 months once I’d stopped doing any breastfeeding at all. Before that I was only feeding a tiny amount - not even every day - and it seemed to be enough to suppress it. Weird.

Oldish thread I know, but I came here looking for answers to the same question.

13 months postpartum here- no period yet. Only breastfeeding at night and was getting a bit worried but going by answers above it seems to vary a lot.

VikingLady · 13/10/2022 23:08

14 months both times. Even though DD slept through from three months and was in her own room at six months, whilst I Co slept with DS until he was one and he fed all through the night.

RebeccaCloud9 · 13/10/2022 23:26

I had pp bleeding for about 6 weeks then 2 weeks later, periods started back. Exclusive bf. Not fair!! Was v pissed off!
