Smear test during pregnancy?

DBS94 · 18/09/2022 18:20

Hi there

I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant and was looking through some old paper work and realised it's been over 3 years since my last smear test. I've a history of abnormal results and colposcopy treatment. On my last test, there was no changes and said they would invite me again after 3 years - I get really worried about these things due to the abnormal results before.

I'm going to call GP on Tuesday to discuss but has anyone been in a similar situation or had a smear test whilst pregnant before? Thanks in advance

You shouldn’t have one during pregnancy, but now schedule it for when you have had baby.

Willbe2under2 · 18/09/2022 18:28

Congratulations OP.

I don't think they'll do it when you're pregnant, and you'll have to wait until 3 months after giving birth (for a vaginal birth anyway, not sure about a c-section)

Michellebops · 18/09/2022 18:52

Due to Covid they're running approximately 6 months behind schedule.

They definitely won't do it whilst pregnant and should be 13 weeks after birth. I had a c section and waited the 3 months as was due when pregnant

I was due one when pregnant and asked the GP. They definitely don’t do them whilst pregnant and will tell you to wait and book one three months after birth.

Thanks lovelies, really appreciate the feedback!

Just checked my last letter and the results were normal and no issues so hoping delaying it a year should be fine x thanks again

Not sure if you have had your booking appointment yet but they all asked if I was upto date and any history etc then so maybe let your midwife know at next appointment so record is upto date?

Not everywhere, I had mine right on time last year (actually it was a couple of weeks over so it was 3m since having DD but near enough)

syntoandtoast · 18/09/2022 19:11

Yes not everywhere - mine was bang on time in July for a routine smear!

Kathryn91 · 18/09/2022 19:14

I @DBS94 I had one while pregnant due to a course of bleeding when I was quite far along and it was really painful!
They said they wouldn’t normally do it but needed to check.
Im also due one and I’m pregnant with baby2 they said they will wait x

DBS94 · 18/09/2022 19:25

@Kathryn91 on looking in to it, it appears that they'll only do it if the last smear showed abnormal results or like yourself, there's symptoms. Will phone the GP on Tuesday just to be sure but I'm sure all will be fine - I'm just a worrier when it comes to smear tests 😂

I thought this op,
I was due my first one last year but had to keep cancelling due to water infections- I suffer ALOT with these and always seemed when I got my appointment finally it came again (probably doesn't help the fact the doctors only do them one day a month!!!!! I do not know why this is) but then I ended up pregnant so I still haven't had one !! Il be glad when Iv had the baby to get it booked it !

DBS94 · 18/09/2022 19:40

@letmeknowwhenyourfree it's such a worry sometimes isn't jt! How long ago was your last one? I think as long as last one was okay and no symptoms they're happy to wait, as far as I'm aware it can take years for any changes to happen (I think) but I'll be booking as soon as I can after baby is here!

Sandcastlesinthesky · 18/09/2022 19:42

I was positive for hpv on my last one. Was supposed to go back in a year. Got pregnant so had to wait about 18 months as you can’t have it done straight after the birth. It was ok

letmeknowwhenyourfree · 18/09/2022 19:55

I was only allowed to get one in November last year but had to cancel, when I rearranged both times I had a UTI and I had thrush once so Iv never had one so I'm really on pins over it. They wouldn't give me one before November last year so I'm a year late to get one ! Xx

DBS94 · 18/09/2022 20:05

@Sandcastlesinthesky my last one was negative for HPV so they pushed it to 3 years, wish I'd triple checked before falling pregnant although now they give a 5 year gap between them so hoping it should be ok

@letmeknowwhenyourfree I wouldn't worry too much, if you're feeling stressed by it definitely speak with your midwife. Different areas of UK have different time scales and wait times and procedures, focus on getting it once baby is hear and you're clear to get it x

Im in the same position. Got my reminder letter a couple of days after my positive test. Told the midwife at my booking appointment and she made a note to get me on the list for a postpartum smear so assume I will get a reminder once baby is here

That's good they're catching up. I was due in January and only got my letter/appointment in July. Results were less than a week.

starfishmummy · 20/09/2022 00:39

I was due one when pregnant and the nurse just put something on their system so I was called a few months after baby was born.

BlueBunny23 · 20/09/2022 17:53

I had one when pregnant but didn’t know I was pregnant and it showed a false result of abnormal cells but the nurse asked if I could be pregnant because she said as soon as she touched my cervix it bled. I got an awful shiver when she said thag and went and bought a test and yup I was! But I was due one after my baby before that and they wouldn’t do it until 3 months pp as tbey said the hormone changes cause false results
