Hi

sorry, I forgot to ask my midwife this: does anyone know about what to do about calcium and calcium supplements during pregnancy?

in general i think (hope) my diet is pretty healthy, but am a bit worried about this one area as i loathe milk and though i do eat butter and cheese (less of it now i can't have soft cheese) i know i take less dairy than most people...but on the other hand not sure whether it's a good idea to start taking calcium supplements when pregnant or not (am 14 weeks).

does anyone know how much calcium i should have and whether the pill version is ok?

thanks

What about yoghurts? That is a good way of increasing your calcium intake. Don't know about supplements I'm afraid.

Green leafy veg, particularly chinese greens are really high in calcium, also tofu, nuts and seeds. You need vitamin D to absorb calcium efficiently.

Vegan and vegetarian websites have lots of info about how to get extra calcium in your diet, without taking supplements, if that's what you prefer.
