Im 27 wks baby dr sent me for us scan as she thought i seemed small turns out babys abdo measurement?
measuremant is only just above 3rd centile, her estimated weight is only 891g (10.6 centile), but every other measuremunt is falling well within average range, fluid seems ok and doppler seem ok just worried as i dont know what could have caused this or if there is anything i can do to improve her weight etc...anyone with any advise would be well appreciated.
my son was born 8 years ago he weighed 7lb 2oz and is now a big boy so i dont understand what is happening this time.

Hi, My friend had a similar situation and she was told that everything was fine and it may seem silly, but to just eat lots and lots!

margoandjerry · 23/01/2008 15:07

my sis had this. Baby was off the scale small (not just abdo but head too) and at points seemed to be falling further and further behind. We were beside ourselves with worry as all other babies in our family are in the 10lb mould not tiny.

She was born two weeks ago. Absolutely perfect. 6.5lb so big enough and lovely. Some babies are just small.

I started having fortnightly growth scans from 26 weeks or so because they said baby was growth restricted. My fundal height measurement was sometimes static from week to week and was usually between 2 and 4 cms behind what it should have been. Most of the growth scans showed baby was fine but on a couple of the later ones the tummy was smaller so they were going to induce me if I got to due date.
When ds was born (on due date-not induced) he was 7lbs exactly with a nice round tummy so not tiny at all! The scans are not always accurate-they had predicted his weight at between 5 and 6 lbs!

I had a similar thing, was sent for a scan at 34 weeks as fundal measurement was small, they scared me half to death telling me baby wasn't growing properly etc, etc.(only abdo measure was small) After several stressful weeks of regular monitoring and being told to be aware of every movement, I saw the consultant, who carried out a scan and said baby was small, but it could be that I produce small babies. Was not allowed my water birth and labour was highly monitored, but having expected a tiny baby he was 6lb 8, not small at all. All that stress, sorry to waffle but I remember how worried I was in my final weeks of pregnancy, just wanted to reassure that outcome can be ok.
As far as I am aware there is nothing you can do to improve the weight, baby will take what it needs from you. sorry can't be more use.

This is a bit the other way round but I was told I was expecting a 10lber and my DD was 6lb 6 when born. I don;t believe these things are very accurate from my own experience.

thank you for all the messages just hoping that things will improve it is such a worry and you tend to blame yourself especially when your working as you think your not giving yourself enough rest, its not nice not knowing what is going on inside your own body!!! thank you x

chops, really glad you started this thread, i am having a similar thing and it is good to hear other people's positive experiences. know exactly what you mean about blaming yourself too.

I had the same with my second and my ds came out fine 7 pound 5! I put it down to lots of different mid wifes measuring me plus running around after my 16 mth old and working, plus moving home at 34 weeks! I was also eating healthy and not pigging out like I did on the first! It doesnt help being told your small does it! made me worry all the time too!All was fine and he is thriving.

Louandben · 24/01/2008 21:09

I was the same with my last pregnancy, had regular scans from 21 weeks on - baby born absolutely fine and healthy, 6.5lbs despite months of worry....he stayed on 9th centile of charts for first year or so but no problems. Please try not to put yourself through the same stress, if doctors are keeping a check and growth is continuing then I am sure all will be fine.

chops79 · 25/01/2008 09:56

tyaca, what are we supposed to do (other then worry)!! it is good to hear lots of positives though. it is such a waiting game, my first pregnancy 8 years ago had no growth problems i did end up in hospital on several occasions with bleeding after 31 weeks but that all ended up fine, in the mean time i was diagnosed with endometriosis and ovarian cyst which adds to the worry of weather that isn't helping too... i have another scan on Feb 14 to check the growth again and it seems like an eternity away, thing is i wouldn't have known about baby's growth if i hadn't gone to Dr with tummy and back cramps which apparently was muscular! what is happening your end?
