Colostrum harvesting

Had lots of BF issues with DC1 and really want to get it right this time around! I'm considering harvesting some colostrum in case DD2 also has the severe tongue tie that DD1 had.

I've got the sterile syringes...when and how do I start? I know how to hand express but just wondering about when and how frequently to do it, and what sort of amounts to expect? Currently 31 weeks

I started at 36 weeks and followed the guidance / watched the tutorial on the My Expert Midwife website. I think it differs with how much you can get and midwife says it has no bearing on your milk supply so not to panic if nothing / very little comes out but I started off filling one syringe the first few days but can now get 2 syringes full from each side as I've tried to do it daily. I find one side easier than the other but have persevered as like you I wanted to be on the safe side!

I started at 36.5 weeks and was really motivated to try because I had gestational diabetes and didn't want baby to suffer low blood sugar after birth.
I tried so hard but never managed to get anything more than 0.1ml at a time. I still collected as much as I could and took a syringe into hospital with me.

I know lots of ladies who were able to get bigger volumes, and for me it hasn't stopped me having a great supply post-natally and I've been able to donate milk to my local NICU milk bank as well as feeding my own son.
All the best with your expressing journey!
I found when you are feeling relaxed and happy was the best time to do it, after a hot shower

Hello

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I was just wondering how you all got on with colostrum harvesting?

I am a midwife and I am trying to design a research study about colostrum harvesting. I am looking for a few volunteers to simply ask about their experiences and to ask what areas surrounding colostrum harvesting would be good to investigate in my research study.

If any of you would be willing to have a chat with me it would be much appreciated! My email is [email protected].

Apologies for the duplicated post - I don't know how that happened!
