How to tell your parents you are pregnant?

I want to tell my parents I'm pregnant. It's very early days I'm only 4 weeks at the minute but plan to tell them at 5 so I can have their support. We are also thinking of telling the in-law parents next week too and then siblings after 12 weeks can.

But because it will only be 5 weeks we won't have had a scan yet. Any ideas how to tell parents?

For clarity they will be excited just won't have a chance to tell them for the first time ever again

Don’t do what I did…. Sit in silence then burst out crying that I was pregnant 😂

DelurkingAJ · 31/08/2022 08:57

I just picked up the phone and told them. Then reassured my DM that we were only telling them and DPIL ‘this early’. No drama!

SunshineClouds1 · 31/08/2022 08:58

I just came out with it tbh.
Put your test in an box/envelope and ask them to open it

BeanieTeen · 31/08/2022 08:59

Just on the phone. Because they live a distance away. I guess if they lived closer I would have said it during a meet up or visit.

Hotandbothereds · 31/08/2022 09:00

Just tell them, it’s lovely news and it’s exciting enough as it is without anything else.

Allgoodthings1 · 31/08/2022 09:00

I got them a Christmas card with a scratch off bit on it saying it

WillPowerLite · 31/08/2022 09:02

Phone call. They were very happy for us. Twas lovely.

What methods were you considering, OP?

Summerof22 · 31/08/2022 09:09

I get lots of vídeos on Instagram with grandparents opening a box and getting out a baby grow saying things like ‘coming soon’ or stuff like that

i don’t know if that’s the kind of thing you have in mind

I asked my mum what she would like to be called- Granny or Nanna? My mum answered without thinking not realising what I was suggesting and then the penny dropped!

I told my parents that I had a new family photo to show them. And gave them the scan photo. Tears of joy all round.

bossgirl94 · 31/08/2022 09:22

Thanks everyone very helpful ☺️

@WillPowerLite I live down the road from my parents so was planning to do it in person. Was thinking of giving them a card but I think I want to say the words. Was going to show them my positive test but wasn't sure if that was a bit disgusting because I did pee on that stick 😂 obviously the cap is on but still

Told my parents on the phone and gave ILs a scan photo in their Christmas card.

My scan was the 23rd December and we travelled to the ILs for Christmas on the 24th. My parents don't live locally to either of us, so a phone call it was. I told them on the 23rd after the scan and had them on speaker phone.

This was before easy video calling (2010). Now I'd probably WhatsApp call them and show them the scan photo.

WashableVelvet · 31/08/2022 09:30

Yeah, no need to show them sonething you wee’d on 😂 plus those tests are confusing, I never remember what set of lines means pregnant and what set means not.

WillPowerLite · 31/08/2022 09:31

Just run down the street all excited and tell them now! 😀

I'd leave the stick at home. It's not the nicest possible way to hear the news.

Congratulations!

Floydthebarber · 31/08/2022 09:39

I would have just told mine but the scan was the day before my dad's birthday so I popped the pictures in an envelope and handed them to him as an extra present.

Unless you know that they love big gestures I would just tell them. It's lovely news to give.

PeanuttyButter · 31/08/2022 10:38

I was originally due Xmas day so told them I might not make it to dinner this year. They said it's fine etc and asked where I would be going instead. I said I might be at the hospital as I'm pregnant and due that day!
My mum literally jumped out of her seat.

Wanderlust16 · 31/08/2022 12:14

I took my mum a walk and while we were stopped looking out at the water I just slipped it in. She was over the moon and then I showed her pictures of my pregnancy tests and stuff. We hadn’t had our scan yet so I just got to tell her little bit by little bit!

dmb91 · 31/08/2022 12:24

We got my parents mugs with nanny and grandad printed on them, it did take a while for my mum to understand 😂

autienotnaughty · 31/08/2022 12:25

I felt weird about announcing pregnancy. It's like saying "congratulate me for having sex!!" Silly I know. I told dm and df when they came to ours on Xmas day. I told pil when we visited over Xmas. No sticks cards etc. it was a couple of weeks before the scan.

mol2mum · 31/08/2022 12:32

We had my parents round for dinner and put a bandana on the dog saying "promoted to big brother" so when he ran up to them as they came in the house they read it🥲

HermoineJeanGranger · 31/08/2022 12:32

We had gone away on holiday, so when we got back and visited my parents, I handed them a gift (they thought was a souvenir) but was actually a newborn onesie 😊
For DP's mum, he showed her a picture of our first scan while she was on the phone, which resulted in her squealing into her doctors ear 😂

DappledThings · 31/08/2022 12:44

"Hey, so this is early days but I'm pregnant. It is only 5 weeks so could go wrong but it's good news for now".

Nice and simple. First and second time over the phone. Third time in person when they had just arrived and I declined a glass of wine. Dad asked if there was a specific reason for that, I said yes but again early days. Done.

chillipenguin · 31/08/2022 12:48

Give them a ring. Tell them you're pregnant but it is early days.
