Smoking whilst pregnant

Jcra · 27/08/2022 04:13

I am 6 weeks pregnant with my second child 10 years apart I smoked when I was pregnant with my daughter only 2 to 3 a day I cut down alot and she was perfectly healthy 8 pound baby. With this one I am finding myself smoking around 5 to 6 a day I absolutly hate it and I feel so ashamed and heartbroken that I carnt stop for the sake of my child the guilt is killing me but my god it is so so hard.
I have mentioned this to midwife and she has referred me to a non smoking clinic to help me so fingers crossed I can stop.

Gosh, some of the replies on this thread are awful. The OP came here for advice and help, not for a kicking.

@ShedHead7 would you like me to put up some links to verify what I've said? Just for fun to really show you up? Or do you want to do some actual research into the amount of air pollutants in the U.K. and the damage they cause?
You insist I'm saying things I haven't. And insist I'm making things up. I will post the proof later. Just for fun.

Yes, please provide me evidence that say breathing air is more polluting than breathing cigarette smoke

Make sure you have evidence with the clear comparisons made between air and cigarette smoke. That would be great, thanks Smile

I'll start with this one

Smoking whilst pregnant
ShedHead7 · 27/08/2022 15:15

And that is just a comparison of ENVIRONMENTAL tobacco smoke, so imagine the difference when it's inhaled directly from a cigarette into a babies bloodstream.

Carlycat · 27/08/2022 15:17

Just stop. You're poisoning your unborn child ffs

rocksonrocks · 27/08/2022 15:19

That is fucking disgusting and so, so selfish. Get actual help instead of looking for sympathy on the internet. Good lord, how unfortunate for your unborn child.

Unforgettablefire · 27/08/2022 15:21

Are you stupid and trying to look smart.
Now, show me where I said the dangers or strength from the other pollutants are more toxic than cigarette smoke. I don't know if they are or not. So please show me where I have said this.
And also showed me where I have made any comparison between anything at all.
I will say it again one more time, there are more pollutants in the air than cigarette smoke. I will post that proof later as I said.

Damnautocorrect · 27/08/2022 15:22

I’ve suffered some irreversible damage because my mum smoked during and after pregnancy. I had to have multiple operations as a result, unfortunately it hasn’t worked.

we were also skint as kids. Really skint. Yet she could always afford the fags.

well done for trying. Please stick with it. I know it’s easy for me to say.

IMeanItThisTime · 27/08/2022 15:29

My mother smoked whilst pregnant with me. I was very small. Health impact or not, I'm sad she didn't care enough to stop but that's who she is.

If you haven't got a clue about the strength of the pollutants etc, then why on earth are you bringing up air pollution anyway? The OP hasn't said she can't stop breathing air, she's said she can't stop smoking! So I don't understand why you would even bring up air on this post?
Unfortunately you can't avoid BREATHING, but you CAN avoid SMOKING! So now the baby is being doubly poisoned no? If the air quality is that bad, ALL THE MORE REASON to stop smoking when pregnant!
Why did you tell her that pregnant women have always smoked? And pregnant women used to drink alcohol? I really don't understand? We didn't use to put kids and babies in car seats, but they used to die in crashes. It's called science and progression! You are trying to make excuses and defend the indefensible. And yet you are the one calling me stupid. Are you really that deluded?

Cornettoninja · 27/08/2022 16:09

So many experts in smoking but very few in addiction. Shame isn’t the best tool, support is. If your concerns are genuinely for the baby perhaps it’s best to hold your piece if you can’t resist.

OP, if you do come back, you know what you want to do and you absolutely can do it, people do all the time and you can be one of them.

Keep your clinic appointment and look into hypnotherapy. Some people find it really helpful in aiding their own resolve. Look up the timelines for nicotine clearing your system, I found it really helpful to use these as something to focus on and a deterrent when I was tempted to undo all my hard work!

Honestly you really can do this.

EverydayIsPJday · 27/08/2022 17:41

You need to do this OP. I'm not a smoker but both my DH when we met and my father smoked. Both quit cold turkey and never looked back. it can be done, and you have the greatest incentive tbh. That and the shear cost. Put the money aside that you would have spent. I bet you can buy babies pushchair with that these days.
Goodluck.

NCmama · 27/08/2022 19:07

Try to ignore the horrible posts.

There is support here but professional support is the way. You won't do
It cold turkey. Some of us have more addictive traits than others.

I met a lovely man, now DH who did not, smoke. I called him the best non smoker in the world. He never asked me to stop and would go out late at night to get me cigarettes because I had chain smoked all I had. It was a stressful time a long time ago.

I gave up for him, but I would never have done it without professional help.

You will do it ! Use all of the resources out there, you have spoken to your midwife - attend the clinic - and posted here.

Keep going!

Unforgettablefire · 27/08/2022 20:07

@ShedHead7 You’re desperately clutching at straws now going through my posts looking for something else to pick at. Let’s stick to what started your shit shall we.
I was talking about air pollution, scented candles etc, fumes from traffic etc. Pushing babies in prams where there’s traffic, they all cause harm to babies and even adults.
You didn’t like me pulling you up when you started shit and inventing stuff I hadn’t even said. So now it’s about “breathing” eh and comparisons and strengths of toxicity ffs just stop it's beyond ridiculous 🤦🏻‍♀️

I made a point to the op that once the baby is born there are many pollutants in the air. You’re berating the op, yet not even knowing the dangers babies are in when being pushed around in a pram around traffic, you have to be shown proof after mouthing off saying I’m talking bullshit. You start on me and lie about what I’ve said I’ll fucking well defend myself do not lie about what I’ve said. And so what if I said pregnant women would drink and smoke in the past! Who tf do you think you are demanding to know why I say what I say??

Read this at your leisure. It’s too long to post given there is such a huge amount of information on the many different pollutants, indoor and outdoor, and the damage it does not only during pregnancy but to adults also. You should have looked this up before trying to be clever saying I was talking shit.
Now piss off out of my face before I report you for harassment.

Report me for harassment when you're the one swearing at me, calling me an idiot etc. yeah ok 👍. So you posted a link about air pollution, great? What does that prove? We all know that there is air pollution. Where does it say that it's got more pollutants than cigarette smoke? Oh wait, it doesn't, because....breaking news...it doesn't. Rant and rave all you want, call me and idiot, swear at me all you want lol, the facts remain you tried to make a poster feel better about poisoning her unborn child, by effectively saying that when it's born it's gonna get poisoned anyway when it's pushed in it's pram. What kind of twisted logic is that. "Oh, your baby is gonna get poisoned out in its pram, why not start the poisoning off nice and early before it's even born, just to make sure it gets a good ole dose" 🤦‍♀️
As I said, all the more reason not to smoke, as not to INCREASE THE RISK.

Hi everyone,

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder of the talkguidelines please. There are a lot of posts here that break talkguidelines and are personal attacks on the OP - please let's be mindful and remain civil.

Please keep this post going, don't delete.

We are all mums, we give birth to miracles.

But none of us are perfect, there are more positives on this post than the trolls.

OP, it's like bringing up our DC - not saying that you are like our DC - we don't shout and berate them, we talk to them and we expound the little wisdom we have as a result of our life experience.

If I and the many others that have shared their experiences have done it
so can you. BUT it is not easy.

Don't give up on the post, because you are not the only one on
MN that is smoking while pregnant.

Others are lurking just haven't posted and we know why.

Life aye!

bluejelly · 27/08/2022 21:23

I would highly recommend Alan Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking book. It totally changed my mindset and by the time I had finished the book I had given up.
Good luck OP!

BeanieTeen · 27/08/2022 21:43

I don’t know why the OP is being attacked as though she said something along the lines of ‘I’m smoking 3 a day but that’s fine right?’. She knows it’s wrong, she understands the risks and she wants to stop. I don’t see how digging into her is helpful, you’re not going to insult someone into quitting smoking.
You can do this OP and you must. I do agree, saying ‘I hope’ is no good - you can’t have in your head that not quitting is a feasible option. I do hope that you can get the support you need, quitting smoking is top of the list for keeping baby and you healthy so it’s big on the agenda therefor good support should be available to you.
Best thing you can probably do to start with is to not even buy the cigarettes. Yes you risk going out and buying them again if you get desperate but even that delay of grabbing your purse, getting in the car etc gives you some thinking time to support you with making the right choice, rather than when they are just easy to grab from your bag. Keep as busy as you can and try your best to avoid any stress, I know people always go for the cigarettes when they’re stressed. I won’t say good luck, it’s not about luck. You will do it - but I do hope you find it easier than you’re anticipating!
