Biggest shock of my life

I've joined this group specifically because I need to talk about what I've just discovered - 44 years old, unprotected s$x with my husband for well over 20 years (had a miscarriage with him when I was 21) - resigned myself to never having a baby of my own. Every time a friend or colleague got pregnant I became more comfortable with it just being me and him for the rest of our lives....
I thought my period was due, sore boobs etc. Had some very light spotting yesterday which I assumed was the start of my period, then nothing. Realised period was late (usually 28 days like clockwork), funny taste in my mouth, super sensitive sense of smell. Thought it was in my head but went to get a test anyway (part of me kind of 'knew') - got a very strong positive - didn't believe it so did another. Then went back to get a digital one which says 3+ weeks. I daren't be happy yet, I'm just stunned.

Oh wow, how amazing!

That's so funny you said that because I've researched and some say older mums and strong line can be indictive of twins too! My mum said same. That would be an even bigger blessing - right now just staying positive and thanking everyone for all the positive vibes!

I was going to say something similar but didn't want to scare you! LOL. Signed, mother of "advanced maternal age" who gave birth to TWO sets of twins! Apparently the older you are the more likely you will release more than one egg!

Thanks again all you lovely people for all the support and kind words. I really am so glad I joined this group and have a feeling it's going to be my lifeline over the next nine months!

I started on pregnacare max today which includes folic acid and vitamin D and a cod liver oil tablet. Also called midwife (who was so lovely!) and explained my situation to her. I queried about the progesterone but she didn't think it was necessary and, as I explained in my previous thread, neither to do I really. She did say I'd need a high dose of folic acid and vitamin D because I'm a little overweight...but she said we'd sort that out at my first appointment. I think most important thing now for me is diet, light exercise and positive frame of mind.

Don't panic but you shouldn't take cod liver oil in pregnancy because of the vitamin A in it, it won't have done any harm as it's not been for ages.

And congratulations!

My mistake it's not cod liver it's omega 3!

Quick update - morning sickness kicked in day after I found out; I say morning sickness, it's actually more like all day sickness and the only thing that makes me feel better is eating! There are some smells I loved before that now make me physically sick too! Taking this a positive sign of a strong pregnancy though. Boobs visibly bigger and still painful - weeing a million times every night!

Was supposed to have first midwife appointment on Monday but for obvious reasons that's been cancelled, just waiting to hear back on new time and date - which I couldn't put forward because I'm currently in Greece! Holiday was well timed I think - haven't done anything too strenuous and been asleep before 10pm most nights. It's been a little challenging finding food that doesn't make me feel sick - very new for me as I can usually eat anything.

All in all though fingers crossed that everything is ok :-)

So, had first appointment with midwife who advised taking 150mg of aspirin from 12 weeks, which I think will be next week. She didn't offer a prescription, just said I could buy it in supermarket or chemist.

Can I find aspirin in the supermarket - nope! So goes to boots and tries to get it from pharmacist - who, when I told them what it was for, refused to sell me it because I'm pregnant!!!

So, found some off the shelf but it says gastro resistant and "DO NOT TAKE IF PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING"

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether gastro resistant aspirin is different?

I will phone midwife in the morning, just curious if anyone had been in this situation too.

pitterypattery00 · 21/09/2022 20:41

Hi OP I also had to take low dose (150mg) aspirin in pregnancy as I was over 40 (it lowers risk of preeclampsia). I just bought it in Boots and Wilkos - on the shelf beside other painkillers. Never spoke to a pharmacist, it's not an over the counter drug.

Picoloangel · 21/09/2022 21:09

Hi OP I had to take aspirin too, in fact as soon as I had a positive test. I had a thrombo issue which had caused me problems previously and meant that I absolutely had to take it. I can’t recall exactly but it was a low dose which I took until reasonably late in my pregnancy - they’ll tell you when to stop.

I didn’t have a prescription, just bought it from Boots or similar. I didn’t take gastro resistant, just bog standard aspirin.

cinnamonbiscuit · 21/09/2022 21:29

I had this issue as well, had to get my DH to buy my aspirin from the pharmacy as I needed 75mg rather than the 150mg they had on the shelves! They wouldn’t sell it to me as I was visibly pregnant. I think my midwife at the time told me that the advice for pharmacists is out of date/somewhat incorrect ( can’t remember her exact wording) and if you’ve been told to take it by a midwife or doctor who knows you’re pregnant, it’s fine to take. It’s a silly system! I’m not sure re the gastro resistant thing, maybe check like you said just to make sure you’re taking the right one. Congrats btw!

pitterypattery00 · 21/09/2022 22:23

Yes @cinnamonbiscuit I think you're right that it's 75mg tablets - so I guess I took 2 per day (it's amazing how quickly you forget all the details of pregnancy!).

ickky · 22/09/2022 22:21

SurpriseSurprise · 27/09/2022 07:47

How are you doing OP? I’ve been thinking about you

Shocked44 · 27/09/2022 08:44

@SurpriseSurprise I'm doing ok, thank you :-). The 'morning' sickness has been quite bad the past few days but I guess it's all part of the experience! Had my booking appointment with the midwife and now just waiting for my first scan appointment. I feel heavier already, not sure if it's holiday weight though! And I feel super tired most of the time. But - again, all of these are still encouraging signs and it'll be worth it in the end!
