Biggest shock of my life

I've joined this group specifically because I need to talk about what I've just discovered - 44 years old, unprotected s$x with my husband for well over 20 years (had a miscarriage with him when I was 21) - resigned myself to never having a baby of my own. Every time a friend or colleague got pregnant I became more comfortable with it just being me and him for the rest of our lives....
I thought my period was due, sore boobs etc. Had some very light spotting yesterday which I assumed was the start of my period, then nothing. Realised period was late (usually 28 days like clockwork), funny taste in my mouth, super sensitive sense of smell. Thought it was in my head but went to get a test anyway (part of me kind of 'knew') - got a very strong positive - didn't believe it so did another. Then went back to get a digital one which says 3+ weeks. I daren't be happy yet, I'm just stunned.

This is such a lovely story! I am so excited for you!!! After several miscarriages, I gave up the idea too. I was told I would need IVF and it’s far too expensive here in Australia. When I returned from our honeymoon, I had a tummy bug that wouldn’t go away. I was so very sick all the time. Eventually DH came home with a pregnancy test and said “try this!” Our “Honeymoon Surprise” just turned 18 and she has a brother and a sister who just turned 16!!!

Musti · 24/08/2022 01:51

Omg that is so exciting! My friend’s mum tried for years to have children and adopted a few children. She suddenly got pregnant at 40ish and had 3 kids in a row!

DC1214 · 24/08/2022 01:57

Congratulations - my little boy is 7 mths, born just before my 44th birthday! : )

Good luck to you.. both

Maisymoomoo22 · 24/08/2022 05:24

Amazing news so pleased for you.
had my DD in the January as I was 45 in the April. After 2 miscarriages I’d also given up and reconciled myself to thinking it’s never going to happen. She’s 20 now and the light of my life.
it’s absolutely the best feeling in the world. Your DH is going to be so pleased.

please ask your doctor to order or progesterone. If you MC was hormone related, at least you’ve tried. Good luck OP.

I have absolutely no idea why the miscarriage happened - I was scanned in the EPU and they said there were no signs of life. My options were let nature take its course or medical evacuation - I chose the later on advice (which I deeply regret) I asked repeatedly why it had happened and at the time was told “it’s a first pregnancy, it’s to be expected”. So I don’t think I have any basis for asking for hormones to be honest. There’s some other personal reasons that I’m not overly worried about that too which I don’t really want to share - but thank you for the very kind words and support xxx

The odds are in your favour.

Today you are pregnant, everything is fine, enjoy it.

As sad as they are, it is common to have a miscarriage. This is a completely different pregnancy, all is well so far.

Did you have that lovely moment when it hit you again this morning as you woke up?

This is my mantra - I need to stay calm and positive but accept what will happen will happen.

I didn’t sleep very well tbh mg mind was racing! But the sore boobs when I got up we’re actually a joy!

Yes when I had IVF babies my daily (hourly) mantra was 'right now I am pregnant' and also PUPO (pregnant until proved otherwise). They are now 6 and 4 ☺️

Good luck and enjoy the sore boobs!

Shinyandnew2022 · 24/08/2022 09:30

Congratulations OP this is an absolutely brilliant thread to read - I fell asleep reading all the messages last night so didn't actually post - you sound very balanced with how you are handling the news !
As you can see from all the comments there are many of us who conceive 40+ seemingly against the odds and have an uneventful time
Take care and look forward to the updates!

I love pp advice for the right now I’m pregnant mantra . that’s so brilliant. And actually really useful to many thing some people might get anxious over!we all need to do a bit of right now thinking.

Janey3090 · 24/08/2022 11:27

Wow huge congratulations! This is an absolutely wonderful thread to read, really hope everything goes well for you.

Nothing to add - just love this post. Actually cried.

This is an amazing thread. I wanted to say congratulations and say I know how you feel. We have male factor infertility and were told we’d never conceive naturally. We had a surprise last year which unfortunately ended in a miscarriage. We tried for a year but nothing happened, we figured lightening doesn’t strike twice. We accepted we wouldn’t ever have our own children. Went away for my 40th birthday and came back more tired than when I went. I recognised that feeling but thought there is no way I’d be pregnant. Did a test and nearly fell off the loo. Up came a positive. I’m now 14 weeks pregnant and everything looks good so far.

I was very conscious of being ‘older’ but the hospital haven’t really mentioned it. I was told to take to folic acid, vitamin d and a low dose of aspirin. Your doctor/midwife will tell you what’s right for you.

I have found the advice of taking each day as it comes good advice. I was worrying at the start but had to give myself a talking to that I was pregnant and unless I had proof otherwise I needed to start relaxing into it. It’s hard to believe when you never expected it but those tests don’t lie (I lost count of how many I did and not one lied to me! 😂)

Enjoy the symptoms but don’t wish too hard for them. I did that and am now into my 7th week of all day sickness. I now wish for it to ease up so I can enjoy food again. 😂

Good luck and please keep us updated. I love a happy thread!

Shocked44 · 24/08/2022 13:01

Thanks again all you lovely people for all the support and kind words. I really am so glad I joined this group and have a feeling it's going to be my lifeline over the next nine months!

I started on pregnacare max today which includes folic acid and vitamin D and a cod liver oil tablet. Also called midwife (who was so lovely!) and explained my situation to her. I queried about the progesterone but she didn't think it was necessary and, as I explained in my previous thread, neither to do I really. She did say I'd need a high dose of folic acid and vitamin D because I'm a little overweight...but she said we'd sort that out at my first appointment. I think most important thing now for me is diet, light exercise and positive frame of mind.

And don’t forget to try and enjoy it. You’ve got this!!!

HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow · 24/08/2022 13:52

Have they booked you in for a nuchal scan. It needs to be done between 11-14 weeks.

I haven't had my first mid-wife appointment yet :-) I think they'll book the scan at that appointment.
