Medical abortion

Hi there..
im due to have a medical abortion by pills delivered in the post which I plan to take over the weekend. I am 47 and thought I would not be in this position at my age and have 2 grown up children. I am going to be on my own at home when I take the tablets as I do not want my children to know. The nurse has advised I have an adult with me incase something goes wrong but this is not an option. I am terrified incase something does happen whilst I’m by myself. Has anyone else taken them whilst being alone?

How far along are you @Myamarsh? I had the pills to induce a miscarriage at 10 weeks that stopped growing at 6-7. I was quite nervous about it but it was okay with paracetamol. Started off like a normal period and then tissue started coming out - I had brief contraction-like cramps that were over quickly, and it was just a heavy period and tiredness after that.

I had someone with me - didn’t need any help in the end but there is a small chance of bleeding excessively for example where you’d want support. Is there definitely no option here?

From what I understand the further along you are the more potentially ‘intense’ it might be, I would worry less about the first few weeks but if you’re well into the 1st trimester it might be much better to have someone with you.

Hope all goes well for you x

Hi @SiberFox thankyou for your response. I will be exactly 5 weeks by the time I take the pills. I was lucky to find out early enough and get the appointment for tomorrow to collect them, as I only rang today. I’m usually pretty good with pain and rarely take anything even paracetamol so I’m hoping I will cope with that. I have only told a close friend who is away on holidays and didn’t really want to involve anyone else. I guess if there worst happens with bleeding I do have people I could ring in an emergency that are close by. I’m glad your experience wasn’t too painful for you x

Oh that’s good that you are early - I hope it’s over quickly and not too stressful x

Hi Myamarsh, I was just at nine weeks this weekend when I took the pills so a bit further along than you so that may be why I had a rough go. I bled a lot and woke up in the night sweating and fainted ( though I am prone to fainting in stressful situations). They gave me some strong pain meds so my fainting could’ve been in response to taking those but I think I bled a lot more than most. I would recommend having a friend or someone not far from you to call if needed just in case. I think most people do fine, especially so early on , but I would recommend having support not far if you can. Good luck.
