Subchorionic Hematoma - 9+4

Hi ladies,

I had a scan at 9+2 following some bright red bleeding at 9 weeks exactly. I was absolutely terrified to see the blood and unfortunately I have a history of recurrent miscarriage, having suffered 4 in the last 12 months.

During the scan they discovered a subchorionic hematoma and I have bled pretty much every day since (or every other day), with bright red blood.

I just want to ask for advice really and whether this is normal?! Every time I see the blood my heart drops and I’m just terrified that I’ll be miscarrying.

If anyone has experienced this, I’d really appreciate some advice on what to expect as ‘normal’ as everything I read seems to say some spotting/bleeding is normal but doesn’t say anything about the frequency.

Thanks so much in advance for your responses xx

Hiya, I had a SCH at 11 weeks. Bleeding was for a week. Didn't get many helpful questions answered at the hospital. So I turned to a group on face book. It seems its alot more common then you'd think. Some people have them the entire pregnancy but still have a healthy baby. So every one is different. I took some of the posters advice which was stock up on pomegranate juice, kale, spinach and pure cranberry juice. Lots of fruits and veg. It all helps with the healing. Bed rest and pelvic rest as much as you can and no heavy lifting. I'm not sure if it helped me but didn't hurt trying and at my last scan (20 weeks) it wasn't viable anymore. Definitely have a look at the fb page though lots of help and positive stories. ❤️

I had this with my second pregnancy. I bled quite a bit at 5 weeks and then it pretty much carried on until about my 12 weeks scan if I remember correctly.
I remember each time I saw blood I thought that I was definitely miscarrying as it was quite a lot of it, not just when I wiped but also in the bowl. Everything I read about it said that only spotting was normal and I basically couldn't find anybody else who had similar amount of bleeding to me and it still turned out ok. I had a few scans that confirmed it was a SH but the midwife still kept saying that they wouldn't know if everything was ok or not and I'd just have to wait and see if I misscarried.
I'm not writing this to worry you, it's actually the opposite. That pregnancy resulted in the crazy 3 year old currently running round my living room! Everything I read basically said I had no hope and the midwives weren't much more encouraging but for me everything turned out ok!

I had this in my first pregnancy. I may be misremembering a few of the details. I had bright red bleeding on and off for a couple of weeks around 9 weeks.
At almost 12 weeks I had a huge, terrifying bleed (I was standing at a shop counter and felt something and when I looked down my blue skirt was red). Ambulanced to A&E and assumed the worst. I was finally scanned after an awful 24hr wait and the baby was fine. The haematoma was bigger than the baby, I remember that. I was told to rest for a week and the bleeding gradually stopped and the rest of the pregnancy was straightforward (DD is now 16).

I hope this comes across as reassuring/hopeful rather than frightening. I would never have believed it was possible to lose so much blood and for everything to be OK. I really hope things work out for you.

Yes, I had a SH at the same gestation as you. Lots of red blood. terrifying. Also lost all my v severe pregnancy symptoms. Was convinced I’d lost the baby. Even my friend who is a GP who came with me to the EPU for the scan (DH was overseas on business) was convinced I’d MC.

All fine on the scan, baby wriggling about. bled for a week or so, blood got darker and darker, and the SH was gone by my 12 week scan.

Now 31 weeks and baby is giving me a good kicking as I type.

Good luck 🍀

@WoodlandMummy thank you so much for replying. This reassures me a little. Huge congratulations by the way, lovely news!

It’s such an anxious time seeing the bright red blood every day 😣. I’m just confused as to when I should expect it to stop/when I should worry. It’s not heavy and it’s not there constantly, but it’s there on wiping most times x

@thewalrus thank you for the reassurance! I’m so pleased all was ok with you, as your story sounds very similar to mine! Keeping my fingers crossed for my 12 week scan which is still 2 weeks away 😫

I had this bleed between 4-10 weeks. Until 8 weeks I didn’t know I was pregnant and went to a private gynaecologist because I thought I am having my periods too close or what? Didn’t occur to think about pregnancy, I would have also been terrified, I guess.
the bleed stopped itself and body absorbs it and in the end it was more brownish old blood.
I was prescribed progesterone though to support the pregnancy.
my friend has just had the same - red big bleeds and also was stressed, but all good according to scans.

Hi all,

I am currently going through the same thing.
I am currently 12 weeks pregnant with an IVF baby conceived with donor sperm and the day after my first scan at the fertility clinic at seven weeks I had a bleed, rang EPU and got a scan a week later and all OK but no mention of a bleed. Bled again two days later, it stopped after about 24 hours so I left it. At ten weeks I woke in the night to a gush of blood, kind of red wine colour, I rushed to a and e at 4am...perhaps because I had noone there to talk me down and things seem worse in the middle of the night perhaps. Doctor confirmed cervix was closed and booked me in for another scan day after. Baby fine on scan but two bleed sights seen. One just above the cervix so perhaps reason it is bleeding. Nurses seemed quite dismissive and couldn't really answer me when I asked questions about when it might stop bleeding etc. I had brown spotting for a few days afterwards. Two weeks later and another bleed, dark red overnight and a big gush 12 hours later. I am absolutely terrified. Just feeling the bleed must have refilled again to have had two weeks of nothing then bleed again and imagining it must be getting bigger. I know EPU will tell me to monitor etc. I have 12 week scan at 12+6 next Tuesday. The whole thing is making me really miserable, anxious and stressed. Everyime I go to the loo I expect the worse. Don't have pain really, just feel a bit sore after a bleed.
Has anyone had experience of intermittent bleeding and any good outcomes appreciated to try and cheer me up a bit.
Thanks!

Someone I follow on TikTok (thepondss) has this and has bled loads but is now healthily 5 months pregnant. She talks lots about her experience on her channel.

Thanks @RebeccaCloud9

I had one too. Had brown spotting, sometimes bright red, on and off for weeks. At 12 weeks (night before my scan) I had quite a bit of bleeding with some clots and naturally feared the worst.

At the scan they confirmed it was a SCH and had no concerns. Ultimately the spotting ended after about 14/15 weeks with nothing since. Currently 38 weeks.

Omgoodness. No sorry the SCH wasn't visable anymore. Silly autocorrect. I'm Currently 24 weeks and everything is going good.

@knr23 hi lovely,

I've got one of these. Mine is measuring at 18mm at the moment. Had it since my 6 week scan and had spotting, they didn't seem too worried to be honest and said it's common and they usually get reabsorbed xxx
