25 weeks pregnant - 3+ ketones in urine?

I swear there’s something new everyday! I had my prem prevention appointment earlier today and everything else was okay except that I had +++ ketones in my urine. Perhaps I drank slightly less water today but I ate properly including right before I left for my appointment. Why can I have ketones in my urine, what does this mean? Can it be harmful to baby? Doctor just asked if I had eaten and drank enough water but apart from telling me to eat regularly and keep snacking throughout the day, and ofc to drink lots of water, she didn’t seem too concerned.

I had this as I had hyperemesis and was admitted to hospital for IV fluids a few times because of ketones. I believe it's to do with fluids and food? I'm sure someone else will confirm!

Isn't ketones in urine a sign of gestational diabetes? Have you done a glucose test recently/have one coming up?

N0va · 01/08/2022 18:54

Should add - this was about a few days of no food at all and unable to keep water down for over a day. DS was fine despite me being so unwell all pregnancy- 10lb 8 too somehow!

@N0va thank you 😀

@TeddyBeans i hope it’s not gestational diabetes!! I have my GTT on Friday 😔

Strawberry milkshake (nesquik) was given to me on tap, about 3 litres in just over a day to be precise, in hospital to get rid of ketones so I could be discharged. Not sure if it'll help you (delicious though!)

dreamerkr · 01/08/2022 19:13

@N0va i feel completely fine in myself tbh, I’m at home. The only thing that does happen sometimes is my heart rate gets high (sometimes 120+) but that’s probably not linked to the ketones. I feel bad now because my diet hasn’t really been healthy in this pregnancy

My diet was awful. My midwife reassured me that baby would take what he needs, she said if all I drink is milkshake and coke but it keeps me out of hospital and those ketones down then it's a win. Have you had bad sickness? My heart rate too was fast but that seems to be a recurring problem for me even when not pregnant so I'm unsure if it's related. My heart rate does slow down when they put the monitor on my toe though!

N0va · 01/08/2022 19:15

Obviously I'm not advising just drink milkshake and coke - my point was not to be too hard on yourself. Pregnancy is tough Flowers

dreamerkr · 01/08/2022 19:22

@N0va i did have some sickness earlier on in the pregnancy but not anymore. I do sometimes feel sick when it’s hot though, and then my heart rate goes fast too. It’s the other way round for me haha my heart rate gets fast when they monitor it 🥺

I had 3+ ketones a couple of weeks ago. I was advised to eat and drink more! I was 32 weeks at the time.

dreamerkr · 01/08/2022 20:25

@Eek3under3 do you have gestational diabetes?

OP posts:
Eek3under3 · 01/08/2022 20:53

@dreamerkr yes. Although, the midwife who reviewed the results/ told me to eat and drink more didn’t know that (I’d popped in to do a urine sample/ bp check after my consultant appt and she didn’t know my history).

CoolBananas21 · 03/08/2022 16:33

My last appt at 25 weeks showed 3+ keytones, and they said for me to drink more water, and I was tested this week for GD and am negative. Am now 28 weeks feeling fine.

Hope this helps x

Been admitted twice for ketones +++ despite eating and drinking. Drs seem to think it's related to malabsorption so have advised making sure I have lots of liquids like soup and milkshakes so they pass through and get absorbed. Plenty of water too.
