Extreme hunger in pregnancy

I'm 12 weeks tomorrow, I see the midwife and have my scan tomorrow so will mention it then.

I just can't stop eating, I can't seem to get full no matter what I eat! It's currently 4am and I've had to get up to eat! It's not like I get a little bit hungry, it's hungry to the point I feel like I haven't ate for a week when it wasn't that long ago I ate! I've been eating little and often but still having 3 big main meals. I've upped my protein but that hasn't helped, I'm eating healthy foods but nothing seems to fill me up! If I don't eat quick enough I start to get this dull ache in my chest/under my ribs. I don't really know how to explain it but it's only when I'm hungry! Surely this can't be normal? 😩 I feel like I'm so tired from not sleeping as I seem to wake up at 3/4am hungry and not get back to sleep! I've been having a banana and toast right before bed but it doesn't seem to help!

Can anyone help? I'm at my wits end! I've just ate and I'm still starving! I don't want to gain loads of weight this pregnancy; so far I've only gained a few pound but still 😭

I had this with one of my pregnancies. In 3 pregnancies I felt queasy and unable to eat huge amounts until around 12 weeks. I also had certain food cravings. But with my 4th pregnancy I just wanted to eat. And I mean eat!

I felt permanently hungry and couldn't manage more than a couple of hours without eating something substantial. Fortunately the extreme desire to eat wore off around 12 weeks - same time as the queasiness/food cravings wore off with my other pregnancies. Hopefully it will for you too!

I’ve just found this thread, I am just over 12 weeks and bloody starving. As in I could eat a normal size lunch and within an hour later I genuinely feel hollow inside as if I haven’t eaten all day. I could easily have 2 lunches and 2 dinners a day on top of breakfast and regular snacking. Trying to have fruit / yoghurt / cooked chicken as snacks but I am craving carbs like crisps / roasts / chicken nuggets lol!! Worried about gaining too much weight in pregnancy!

Has your hunger slowed down at all???

I'm exactly the same!

I'm 14 weeks now and it has slowed down a little, I don't wake up in the night to eat now but I'm still always starving like I haven't ate all day! It's horrible isn't it 😩😩 I also crave carbs! I wish I could say something that would help but I'm yet to find anything!

So horrible, I haven’t been sick in my pregnancy but it’s a real hunger nausea if I don’t eat! Even if I ate 5 mins ago lol!
Hopefully it eases off; or the tiredness goes so I can actually walk/swim to burn it off as right now I do as much exercise as a slug!!

HippeePrincess · 16/08/2022 17:54

I’ve been like this but it’s settled at 14/15 weeks thankfully. Peanut butter is really helpful, fats and protein seems to be the way to stave off the hunger mostly.

I'm 12 weeks too and had the same gnawing hunger and the pains when I left it too long. I also had a really sluggish digestive system and constant nausea/vomiting. I researched and it said that many pregnant women become intolerant to meat and fish as they're harder to digest. I've cut them out for the past 3 weeks and things have massively improvised.

YellowHpok · 16/08/2022 18:10

I was like this with mine. It didn't go away but I found ways to manage it. I found some low calories sweets that I would essentially suck on all day. Oranges were also good, anything crunchy like Peppers and cherry tomatos.

I had a very skinny colleague who used to go to bed each night with 2 massive baguettes ready for her hunger midnight feast.

We both put on extra weight, but we lost it. I found I just had to forgive myself for it and crack on. It is hard.

Im nearly 12 weeks and in the last week or so I somehow managed to put on weight already, in the same boat here @gonewithtthewind 😅. I’ve been pretty nauseous for a good few weeks and lost a bit of weight and now I put it all back on and more. SO hungry all the time. Huge portions, cravings, second helpings. Problem is my energy is still low so I can’t exercise to help burn all this excess. I really hope this will stop soon 😳

I'm exactly the same! I've gained 8lbs in the first trimester alone, which is crazy 😩😩 I'll be huge by the end. I've also had 0 energy to do anything so haven't burnt any of it off! Today is the first day I've felt like I've had some energy for ages!

I'm the same! It's so hard when you're usually a healthy/conscious eater and then all of that goes out the window. I'm trying not to be too hard on myself and remember a few weeks of over-eating is nothing in the grand scheme. And I feel sick if I don't feed the beast! One thing that has made me feel better is doing some exercise

FudgeSundae · 16/08/2022 19:15

You’re growing a human, that’s why you’re hungry! I was ravenous in both pregnancies but gained a normal amount despite eating mountains of carbs.

stardust00 · 16/08/2022 19:18

I'm just waiting for the promised 2nd trimester energy boost, glow etc 😅It's strange going from as you say @WDWY being a healthy eater and very active to a ravenous zombie - exercise definitely makes me feel better although at the moment it's mainly walking + gentle yoga - I was doing HIIT and running before as well as that, now I'm out of breath getting up the stairs and so bloated I look 6 months already 😆

ChagSameachDoreen · 16/08/2022 19:35

I'm 17 weeks, and I'm eating my way around the kitchen like a Pac-Man. Ravenous.

Q2C4 · 16/08/2022 20:03

I ate a lot in the first trimester of both my pregnancies but the urge passed after 12 weeks both times. If what you're eating is healthy I wouldn't worry too much.

Rosesandteacups · 16/08/2022 20:25

I am exactly the same! Just turned 13 weeks but still can’t stop eating. Can’t tell if it’s just weight gain or the start of a bump (second pregnancy) but my clothes are not fitting anymore.

babymamaxox · 16/08/2022 20:39

Im nearly 10 weeks and find myself hungry quite a lot, I try my best to healthy but it doesn't seem to make me feel any fuller, 8:30pm and I'm currently eating toast! If I don't eat I'm feeling super sick. I'm having baby no 3 and I'm already in maternity leggings!! I don't remember eating this much with my other 2.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 16/08/2022 20:44

I had this, I'm sorry to say I put on a lot of weight that took a year to shift. I was endlessly hungry. I drank loads of water ate ice to try and curb it
